When does registration leave CA DMV?
« on: February 12, 2015, 02:03:27 PM »
If I have a bike with major late fees on registration, how many years is it before it is wiped out of the DMV system in California? I thought it was 7 but apparently not... Maybe it never does. Bike was last regged in 2003 but shows $600+ in fees.

Sorry man.

Buyer Beware

When a California registered vehicle is purchased, the new owner (buyer) will be responsible for any past due fees and penalties when the vehicle is transferred into the new owner's name, unless:
• The vehicle registration is current.
• The PNO is on file with the DMV. Fees must be paid before operation to avoid penalties.

As I understand it, it was 10 years. I had a similar situation with my build back in '09. If you have a vin and plate, you can look it up online. If any past registration is due, it will show you what it is. If it doesn't return anything, you should be ok. I had no title either, only a bill of sale. Had no problems getting it registered or passed the CHP inspection.

Yea that's odd. Last reg was 2003 and its not 2015 and DMV is still listing it in there with backfees. Broke ass state needs all it can get.

If it is in fact showing the late fees then you're bummed. You'll have to pick up that tab. Should have knocked it off the purchase price if you could've.
