Rear discs on SOHC4 550's: Nope, all drum.

There's a couple of wide rear tire threads, do a search or two.  I think the discussions were mainly based on how big a tire you could jam on a stock rim as opposed to a replacement rim.  Of course, tread wear and handling may suffer with an improperly sized tire on a stock rim.  But there are replacements available, I just don't know anything about them.  I know there's a few on here running oversized rears...

Seeing as how troublesome the front disc brakes are on my 550, I'm pretty happy having a drum on the rear...
That's like hypnotizing chickens...

I don't see the point in a rear-disk either. Unless you get a new hub and are looking to save weight maybe..... The reardrum is pretty good, if you want more stopping power the front should be first on your list.

You could probably get a 750F1 rear hub with disc in there but you would need to work out a mount for the master cylinder and res. Also a break steady arm as it needs to be on the top of the swingarm, then rework the brake pedal mount and reposition the brake light switch. Theres no reason why it can't be done but the setup is a bit fierce on the 750 so would probably just lock up all the time on the lighter bike, perhaps modern rubber would cope better......
