1972 CB 350 Four
« on: February 15, 2015, 10:45:59 PM »
Seems like nobody builds 350s cause they are too slow?? Anyways here's the story. I came across Adam Gaspic's build the Silver Bullet     on the electric federal channel on you tube.
Got pretty inspired by his builds and have been wanting to start my own project.  Tired of reading about it and spectating.
Found a nice bike in Oregon a Black CB350f  that I almost bought, It looked nice in the pictures but you don't know the condition until you see it in person.
I didn't purchase it because it wasn't a complete bike and didn't want to have to track down spare parts. He said some guy from Everett came down and was going to buy it (Black CB350f). But he ended up selling his other "mint" bike to him Matador red CB350f.
I went home and stated a CL search again, and found a Matador red CB350f. Met up with the owner talked to him a bit and come to find out he was the one that bought the "mint" bike. It was far from that but it was all there except the pipes. I rode it around the block and made the deal and bought it.
I was going to just ride it as is but didn't think that was a good idea because of four decades of crust and grim on it. So I decided to completely disassemble it and do a full restoration. Any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

Started by removing the carburetors. Were leaking pretty bad from the bottom tube thing lol. Looks like they need to be cleaned. What do you guys think?

Picture of the airbox removal (it was pretty difficult I had to remove the battery all airbox internals the rear fender and plastic fender liner. disconnect the electrical and then was able to remove the carbs.

Project fuel.

After removing the oil filter, oil pan, rear brake, clutch lever, foot pegs or rear sets?, electrical, chain sprocket. I was able to remove the engine from the right side. Yea!

This stuff works great. With the help of a tooth brush and microfiber.

Ta Da! The oil pan was caked with oil and dirt. 40years of it. Sorry no pics. but this is it for tonight.

its really not that bad... i have two in my garage that were leaning against the owners house since 1989. Lots and lots of rust, mice, spiders, etc. One is being restored and the other I'm going to play with just for fun. The carbs are a lot easier to get off if you pull the metal flange/connector piece back through the airbox. You can use a small flathead to get it out of the rubber grommet then pull it backwards. Then remove the plastic air chamber(still takes some effort) and the carbs are free. If you need any other help feel free to PM me.

A great place to see exploded views of the parts for disassembly/reassembly is here:

Took the head off the motor.

Stripped the bolts! FML.

Alright so this was the main reason I decided to take the engine apart. Initially I had found a piece of the piston ring in the oil pan!  >:( What would you guys do? Any suggestions?

So this is the best picture I could get of the damage but the cylinder walls have been marred pretty deep. I personally want to replace the cylinders with parts from a donor bike.

I loved my little 350F, I have a build thread on here if that would help you.  That piston is trashed for sure, and if your cylinders are scored they need to be honed out and made smooth again, SO you need a new piston, ( or pistons ) new rings and a hone job. Or just put a big bore kit in her.

@Johnnie the gunk didn't damage the frame paint. It rinses off with water. Also I wasn't really too worried about the paint I'm going to get it media blasted. Check for weld damage. Then get it painted back all nice.

@2strokeTrush. I saw a little bit of it. Liked what you did. Seems like you were the only one on here with a 350four build. Thanks for your help. The Cylinder walls are gouged. I don't think I want to bore it. Just stick with factory. But I will see as this build progresses.
