Landed a CB750K3
« on: February 17, 2015, 03:50:20 PM »
Like the rest of you 750 fanatics I watch CL for bikes in my area just to see what is out there. To find one local in the rough is getting slimmer each year. Like the rest of you I was really not looking to get another :D Found one 2 1/2 hours from me a couple weeks ago. Been talking to the guy for that long about the bike and he was fielding a ton of calls. He only had one pic to work off. "Bike was running when stored 20 years ago." :) Built in 11/72 she is a 1973 CB750K3 with 15,321 miles. It has been in the family since new owned by the sellers uncle. When the uncle passed it was given to the sellers brother. The sellers brother passed and the seller got it a few years ago. I usually do not buy bikes without titles, but I plan to use this as my first no title experience. Can always go the VT route. WI DMV shows no info on this bike. Seller says it was probably last titled and licensed in 1973 when purchased new. I am in no hurry to start the project, but wanted to get this before someone cut it up. The scoop - bike always kept inside. Frame is solid. Speedo is damaged, but I have an extra. Needs the grab rail which I have here. Has a 4-2 exhaust on it. They put 75-76 blinkers on the front for better visibility. Gas tank - no dents, clean and the guy even drained it before it was put away. Tank sides look nice for OEM paint, top is faded as expected. There is no center stand on it so I will need that and the hardware to mount it. She may be froze up, but will know for sure once I get it off the trailer and get a center stand on it. There is still fluid in the master, but that will be rebuilt anyway. Very little rust on the chrome and rims looks nice. Have not yet popped a bowl off to look at the carbs. Hope they are as clean as the tank. Will need a OEM seat or maybe I can recover this one. The oil filter cover bolt looks very good. Side covers have cracks, but all intact and tabs in place. Handlebars are straight, but ears are dented. I think I have spares here. She came with owners manual, key but no tool kit. I know you want to know the price - $500. So I think I did well. Now, if someone has a K3 stand and hardware for me please let me know. I will put an ad in the wanted section too. Enjoy the pics...the first 2 pics are how I found it when I got there.

Hey Johnie. Well you did it again ;D Even without title I was willing to bet it would end up at your house. If it makes you fill better I would of done the same thing ;) I know when you get done with it it will look like a different bike.  So still aren't sure if engine is free :-\

Good for you........and I have a center-stand with the extras, and the turn-signals if needed.

You forgot to tell everyone that you also have a set of OEM 341 pipes. BTW.........someone on this site may want (as in pay-for) the aftermarket pipes.

Nice to see that there are still deals out there.
Even better to see them go to a good home and not get hacked up into some Hipster art project.

Way to go Johnnie!  Your right they are getting harder, and harder to come by in tact at a decent price.  They used to be everywhere, but with the hipster hackers and overseas buyers the supply is dwindling.  If it keep up like this in another 5 years we will all be doing good.

Noticed the PO had drilled holes in the fork caps and installed air. Doubt that would work and would probably blow out the seals. He must have been looking for a firm ride.

Great find.  It's pretty sanitary for sitting so long.

NOW HACK IT UP AND MAKE IT INTO A CHOPPER!  ;)

This looks like a great candidate for a survivor or a restoration.

Stev-o...you are welcome.  ;D

Racer Fan...I am thinking along the lines of a survivor route for this bike right now.

Was taking a look in the tank today. Noticed something I have not seen in any of my previous bikes. The petcock tube into the tank is split right down the middle. Maybe some water in there at some time?

Nice find Johnie! I am curious of your opinion about the bikes for sale around us. Do you think this winter less has been advertised via CL and other Internet search engines?  I haven't been as involved in the search this winter but when I do look the finds are very very limited.

Nick I thought you may snap this one up before I could get down there. It was in Racine. I have been watching CL really just to see if anything was around. I really was not looking for one. Still tweaking the 69 right now. The ones I did see were over 1K and not worth the money. This one for $500 I felt I could not go wrong even if I have to part it. You are correct as there has not been much offered on CL as far as the 750 goes. I really think these are not going to get much easier to find as the years go by and the bikes hidden away just deteriorate even more.

I'm happy to see it went to you johnny! I went down and was the first to look at it. Happy for Rob the seller also,he seems like a good guy that has run into his share of bad luck. Hope you can free up the motor and title it. Don't know if you were one of them but there were 2 other guys with $450 offers.

GL!

"How come you didn't buy, Mike?"

He was asking $750 without a title, which was ok if I could get it for less and if it looked ok in person. Both tires were completely flat and the motor was froze, but we pulled it out of the garage againts its will anyway. Like Johnny said,It's well worth the $500 in parts and even better if he can get it running and titled. I don't think he would have sold it for $500 when I looked at it and he was determined to give the time needed to collect all offers. It was a parts bike to me and I actually have too many parts bikes as it is. (always room for 1 more)

Both Johnny and the seller a good guys so it worked out the best way possible in my mind.

Thanks Mike and you are correct. Rob was such a nice guy and is a survivor! He has had his share of bad luck, yet will bounce back. We hit it off on the phone and then I went down and bought it without even seeing it. I am glad we could work it out. To be honest, I was hoping someone would get it from the forum. When I talked to Rob I was always surprised it was still there. Tell you one thing, it took me over an hour to get that battery out today. It had "bloated" from the years and was so tight in the box it was wicked to remove. Pulled the bowls and 2 were dry and 2 had minimal gas. Jets are actually pretty clean. I will go through them anyway. Was surprised to find the throttle working fine and slides not stuck. The rear tire holds air. The front tube is shot. Rob wants me to stay in touch with him which I plan to do. This guy was so nice we rode around Racine so I could get the bill of sale notarized which is required if I go the VT route for the title. And being presidents day when I was there...all the banks were closed. We found a lawyers office open and he handled it for us. What a day that was...
