Progress - yesterday I pulled the air box, carbs and caliper. Good news...put a battery in and the electrics work. Minus burned out low beam and blinker all electrics appear fine. The kicker was still stuck and the bike would not turn over pushing it in 5th gear. I decided to give the starter button a quick touch thinking it would not move. Low and behold...the motor turned over with short bursts from the starter. A few more touches of the starter and she turned over fine and the oil light went off. Kicker now moves normal too. So that issue is behind me. Now working on that VT title.

Motor is free. Great news there Johnie!!! Not sure why the only way you could get it to up loosen up was by hitting the starter button though ???  Maybe the starter was in a bind not letting  the motor turn over and all it took was a touch of the switch to free it up.

Man if feels good to get back to working on a bike. Sure beats sitting around in the winter. Today I got the carbs apart and they really are not to bad. The mains are 110's and were pretty clean. The slows only one was plugged. What a difference it makes when they shut off the fuel. Now for a carb bath...I really should get myself a sonic cleaner. Last time the local dealer did it for me free if I brought in some venison sausage for the guys. Maybe I will give that a try again...

Noticed the PO had drilled holes in the fork caps and installed air. Doubt that would work and would probably blow out the seals. He must have been looking for a firm ride.

I drilled my fork caps and installed air, too. 40 years ago, to be exact! It works GREAT. It takes 3-10 PSI, depending on the payload on the bike. I use the early-style (2-lip) fork seals from the K1 (I have K1 forks, anyway) or aftermarket seals that are 2mm less thick than standard. Then I installed a backup ring below the clip. This way the seal floats on the air pressure and seals against the tube, makes it dry and lifted.

Question: carbs 657A with 110's and 40's plus stock air box. PO has the needle position on the 5th notch. He was running 2-2 shorty exhaust. I am not sure if I will be running these 2-2, 4-1 Mac or my extra 341's. Any big deal if I just put the needle to the #4 notch (spec for 341's) or would there be issues if I ran anything other than the 341's in the #4 notch? Never ran anything but stock exhaust on these bikes, but just wondering what you carby experts think for the notch position here.

Thanks Stev-o...the Mack was on my other K3 when I bought it. It is in excellent shape which is the only reason I considered it.

Go to the 4th notch on those needles: there are no pipes out there (except the old Dunstall 4-2) that affect jetting in these bikes. Intake changes do, but exhaust, no.

The #110 main is pretty rich: if you get issues with plug fouling, maybe try a #108 or #105.

Moved the K3 from the cold garage into the warm shop. Dang, we will be -6 tonight. Took the flat front tire off to replace it. Can't be rolling this around on a flat tire all spring. Carbs are done and ready to install, but no hurry. This bike needs a good cleaning for sure. As the pic says, "she has company now."

Actually Stev-o it is nice to get at another project :D Yes, this bike sure has some caked dust on it, but I think that has really protected the chrome. Even though there are dings in the fenders they look pretty good. And the front rim is cleaning up very nice.

John, what kind of floor do you have where the k1 is parked? Is there some sort of coating you put down, or is that tile?

DH...I had an epoxy floor put down in the shop. Not the painted from Menards, but had a epoxy contractor come in. They grind the top of the concrete a bit and the adhesion is really good. Then they lay down the epoxy, sprinkle down the flex colors of my choice, wait 24 hours and put down a sealer. This is the 3rd year and it has held up excellent.

Good news again...got into the headlight bucket to find the harness all intact with no splices. Pulled the tach seal to find the PO for some reason had a lock washer in front of the seal. Started to degrease the engine while I wait for the front tire and fork seals.

Have you taken your tappet covers off yet John ? Those can sometimes be fun on a new project. Think you mentioned the oil bolt came out easily, that's a good sign.

Eric...yes, I have the tappet covers off and the oil draining as we speak. Even the OEM oil filter bolt is pristine. And the crush washers are in place on the oil tank and drain bolt. I always clean out the oil tank on these bikes and this one was remarkably clean. The guy I got it from said his uncle was real finicky about changing oil and filter.
