Ever have slides get stuck AFTER ultrasonic cleaning?
« on: February 20, 2015, 01:39:00 PM »
I've cleaned a decent amount of carbs over the years, and this has yet to happen.

CB650 carbs. Took bowls apart, jets etc all the usual stuff. Not my first rodeo. Dump the bank of 4 bodies in the ultrasonic for 20 min. Looking spotless, rinsed well everything is looking good. All back together and #4 slide is stuck in the bore (was free before I cleaned them). There's no dirt or gunk, nothing. The carbs look immaculate. I've cleaned carbs this way for years and almost always 100% success. Never had this happen before. There must have been some kind of hot/cold reaction that they didn't like?? How did I clean these suckers and somehow make em worse....

is it possible that you got the slides in a different body than they came out of?  it could be just a slide with/without wear binds or is tight in a different body.

Positive that the slides are in the correct carbs. Totally lost as to what is happening. Guess they are coming all the way back apart.

They may be too clean, maybe try a few drops of oil on the sliding surfaces? raw aluminum on raw aluminum doesnt always slide so good. My CB450 carbs are like this a little lube goes a long way.

Sometimes carb bodies get slightly warped if they are mounted too tightly.  That warping can cause their slides to stick.

+1 Nothing to lose.
Just loosen the rack up slowly and keep checking every time you go from one screw nut or bolt to another to see if it frees up and go from there. I have had some bind up when tightening the back plate

Thanks for the tips. I'll dig into it Monday and see what I find.

Yup, started loosening up the rack and sure enough everything was free. That's never happened to me before somehow and I got real nervous for a second that I somehow warped the body. I am after all used to Amal carbs on brit bikes that distort if you dare torque them down to the actual spec... :o
