Gas return cable
« on: October 11, 2006, 12:44:25 PM »
My gas cable was a little ... old so for safety reasons i went to the honda dealer after a new cable. (+ some other stuff)
The (old man) after the bar asked my if my gas return cable was still ok? Err what is a gas return cable and why do you need it for?

I think... i've seen on the carb's there is a big spring who pull's the gas back.
So you don't push a cable with your handel?

any idea's?

If you mean the throttle cable(s), most of these bikes used a 'push'-'pull' dual cable system.  The big spring on the carbs was used to automatically return the throttle to the idle position, which the "pull" cable works against this spring to open the throttle.  The "push" cable was a safety measure in case the spring breaks, you can still force the throttle closed manually.

If you want to replace one, you probably will want to replace the other too.  Just like I'm looking to do...  ;)

The ironic part is the extra friction added to the system by this cable can cause the throttle to stick open >:(
When you lube the cables make sure you do both of them.
In the UK anything over 40 years old only needs insurance and Fuel.

You know a push cable just dose not make sense to me.It would if the inner part of the cable was a solid wire, but with a stranded cable I don't think you could not push the throttle closed.Dannie

I took my return cable off 2 yrs. ago.No problems. Have you looked at that return spring? Its a stout mofo and I can't see it breaking. Its like the ones we used to have on our old carbureted autos. Has anyone here ever heard of one breaking?

the return cable doesn't push, it pulls, so stranded is fine.
Why? yeah, I ask that every time I pull my carbs.

I run with one cable too, for the aforementioned extra friction that the second cable imparts to the whole setup.

Has anyone EVER had a throttle spring break on them?????????

Man, that is some good news. Thought I was going to have to keep the second cable in there. Don't modern bikes just have one cable? They seem to get along just fine.

Seems to me that two return springs, each with half the tension of the original spring would be the safer & paranoid (me) way to go.  ;D That way if one breaks, you still have some return tension–possibly saving your bacon.

However, by removing the push cable, I'm sure that would void the warranty !! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

When you lube the cables make sure you do both of them.

If the cables are lubed correctly the ONLY reason throttle sticks is the cables adjusted too tight.
The friction is the throttle grip/housing being pulled onto the bar. You need a little slack in BOTH cables.
I've run the 550 for at least 80,000 miles with only one cable and never had a problem with sticking
