Author Topic: Yet another from "Behind the Barn" (Read 4186 times)

Picked up a couple motors today, literally from "behind the barn". Had to break out the machete to get to them. One was missing the head and cylinders, the other was missing just the head and most of one piston. They have been out in the elements for a very long time. Got them home and pulled the oil pans and oil pumps to give them a chance to "air out". They are both in pretty much the same condition:

Uggghhhh.

I'll salvage what I can... at least the price was right!

Did you have to fight swamp thing to recover those? Got to be the worst I have seen to date.

There were some bear tracks... we were on the edge of the Ocala National Forest!

Yep, they were free, just had to go get'em. It's a sickness... can't pass up free hardware!

I do have an engine that is in very good condition that has a goobered up case from the dreaded chain break. If I only get a set of useable cases it was worth the trip!

I'll post updates once I start breaking into the cases.

Ocala National Forest you got to be kidding me! I once picked up a hitch hiker in GA on my way to an Ebay convention in Florida and dropped him off in Ocala. Apparently drifters, hippies, and hobos winter in the forest.

Yep, our population grows during the winter, both homesteaders and homeless. You can sleep outdoors down here pretty much year-round. It's not always comfortable, but it can be done.

The scorpions don't much care for PB Blaster, they came scurrying out as I started hosing it down!

Digging through junk piles as a kid always made me feel like I was on a treasure hunt..... until we found the copperheads and or yellow jackets! As the likelihood of getting tetnus goes up, so does the chance of finding something great.

You can't buy patina like that. Well, OK you can, but you might not want to. I had an engine with moss on it once. I was disappointed when it dried out and went away. It really ran well and I eventually put in an 836 kit, cam, ported head etc. It's an awesome motor now.

Project "Scorpion"!

As a matter of fact, I captured the critter in a small container, so I may just have to "capture" it in acrylic and make a key chain out of it!

As bad as everything looks, it is coming apart much better than expected. I expected every other bolt to be seized and or broken, yet have encountered very few problem fasteners so far, and none broken. Removed so far:

>Alt cover
>Shift cover
>Trans countershaft bearing holder
>Alt flywheel and starter gear
>Starter
>Clutch cover and throwout bearing. Had to pry the bearing holder out, can't understand how that didn't break it!

The clutch however, has so far resisted my efforts to remove it.....

Might get the cases split tonight!

Back in 1971, I bought an early K0 from insurance salvage that had been stolen and dumped in Dickinson Bayou. It had apparently been under semi salt water for 6-9 months. It was literally covered with barnacles when I got it. For some unknown reason, the engine had no water in it. The outsides looked as you would expect but did clean up pretty nice.

We always called it "The Barnacle".

Wow! No chance of that here. Both were missing the cylinder heads and the one being documented here didn't even have cylinders.

Did manage to split the cases tonight without much drama. No more stowaways and no broken bolts. Had to pry the primary chain off the sprockets, then had to pry the crank out of the case.

Nice! Beats the heck out of the free mud dauber wasps I received in a batch of parts once.
