Cylinder Gasket Removal 1971 CB500
« on: April 06, 2015, 04:13:33 PM »
I'm trying to remove my cylinder gasket.  I have tried spray-on gasket remover and heat, and nothing works.  After trying a brass brush on a Dremel, it appears that the middle of the gasket is brass.  It looks like brass, it takes a nice polish, and it seems to be metal.  This gasket is really stuck on.  Does anyone have any suggestions for its removal, please?

Thank you for the advice and the encouragement.  I am honing the cylinders, replacing the rings, and lapping the valves.  At least that's the plan.

Just did the same. I had really great luck with a dremel tool and some scotchbrite wheels. You can get em' cheap on Ebay — packs of 30 — or just make your own with a little screw-on mandrel and scotchbrite squares. I also found that synthetic steel wool worked really well.

After I did all that cleaning up, I took em' into a shop for honing, etc., and they got everything way, way cleaner for $20.

I had the same problem and used a cheap ($20 from Aldi) Die Grinder with a nylon  surfacing disc. It'll take off the gasket quickly without damaging the surface.
It worked great for me.

Are you doing the work, or having a shop? If a shop, have them deal with the gasket when they hone the bores.

+2 on this method. I use to do all the cleaning and glass beading the fins until they told me they would do it when boring and honing for not much more.

Thank you all for the good ideas.  I'm not planning on taking it to the shop, so I'll try the die grinder and the dremel methods.
