Two Stroke Generator HELP?
« on: July 02, 2019, 07:34:18 AM »
A few years ago, I bought this VERY SMALL generator at a yard sale, for $75! I used it for powering cooling fans on my Legend race car for a full season. Always worked well.....

Last week, tried to start it and no luck. Pulled the plug and cranked it over, healthy spark visible. Popped off the tiny carb (float bowl was full) and cleaned/blew it all out. I can see a reed valve (?) at the base of the intake manifold. Both “flaps” are there and clicking and out when pushed with a screw driver tip. Lots of fuel flow from the petcock.....

Today i’m Going to make sure there is compression, with a screw in tester.

Any other ideas before I toss it in a dumpster??

Try some starting fluid.
Be careful, it's pretty peppy.

2 strokes are sensitive to air leaks. Might be bad crank seals.

Plus depending on what premixed oil you use, it can gum up when left sitting for a long time. Spray the carb out with carb cleaner.

Good luck.

Does it have some sort of air filter/screen that requires maintenance or replacing?

Clogged jet or emulsion tube?

I assume you’ve dumped out the old fuel and replaced it with new gas/oil.

If you can cover the carb intake with the palm of your hand or even your thumb to completely seal off the intake, give it 5 or 6 pulls of the starter rope. This can suck  a gummed up passage way clean. This is assuming it is NOT a diaphragm type carb.

Checked compression, over 120 psi. Carb is very simple, cleaned and all passages clear. Healthy spark and I drained it dry and mixed fresh gas (50:1). Not a burp. I wonder it something has turned on the crank and ignition is not firing at TDC? Will check that, try a new plug and then off to the scrap metal bin!

Good point on crankcase seal....... i’ll Pull the carb and crank it over. If the reed valves don’t move, that’s probably it. Any other ideas to test them? Without stripping the whole thing?

Checked the on/off switch and wiring in case some little critter has chewed through it?

I would guess if you’re getting spark, this should be okay .

If you have spark, shoot about a teaspoonful of fuel (premix if you have it but pure gas is OK since it doesn't hit the bearings this way) into the sparkplug hole, screw the plug in and give it a pull. If it runs a few seconds... the engine and ignition are basically OK - look for fuel or carb problems. These things have very simple carbs that are not easily comparable to bike carbs, no idea what yours has but most have a "jet" in the bowl attachment bolt that gets blocked with goo if left sitting with fuel in. The floats and float valves are also weak. Many have a diaphragm "fuel pump" on the side of the carb that works from the intake vacuum: the diaphragm gets stiff or cracks and you get no fuel, or the tiny check valves stick. Older ones DO NOT like ethanol "enhanced" fuel, the diaphragm degrades quickly.
Chinese generators seem to all come from the same factory, same basic model with maybe different covers and painted/labelled for many different brands. Because of that parts are often easy to get on ebay, I bought a complete new carb for $10.00 - just found one that looked the same in the listing pics. It worked fine.

Bodi......carb was just off and spotless. I tried “quick start” spray and no noise. Next: your teaspoon of fuel/premix. It that works, I’m starting to think crankcase seals may be a good ext bet. Thanks!
