Send your cam to megacycle for a regrind, is probably number one.

A big bore kit -- 550 or -- if you're feeling lucky -- 600, can be had on Ebay for pretty cheap, although you'll spend more money reboring and such.

The CR carbs are reputed to be worth about 5 HP themselves, but that's more than $100 per pony.

Porting and flowing; some poeple say it's magic for the SOHC, others say it's a waste of money. Couldn't say myself.

Good quality pipes supposedly unleash these bikes, but I don't know how anyone ever found that out as I've never seen anything but simple "old tech" Kerkers and such.

There are sevaral articles on that topic here:
http://sohc4.us/cb550

Some of them are old and parts may no longer be available, so be sure to tell me how it worked out. I'm itching to get more power too.

Cam
Piston kit
Carb upgrade
Bigger valves (I'm still waiting for my valves)
Port head
Exhaust
Drop ALL excess weight
My 400F is not about 55HP Now (looking for 60HP after valve job).

this may be a stupid question, but has anyone ever run methanol on one of these. I used to race cars a few years back and we ran methanol. Great for power and a nice addition was the cooling effect of the methanol. Only downside I know of is LOUSY fuel mileage.

If you are overweight at all, consider a diet- Imagine taking 20 lbs off your bike weight!

Also, I always wondered if lighter aluminum rims would be a big deal- lots less rotational mass, my guess is this would = more available power.

Hornets Nest..........

No one mentioned opening up the air intake with pods and going "bigger mains" richer on the carbs.
I know I'm not the only leper here with this set up with no ill effects.

Tuning: has to be done correctly, but not an issue.
Rain: not an issue "pissed on many a day"
Wind: not an issue "Eastern Oregon Ride at a 45' angle "
Low end: not an issue
High end: not an issue
Fuel milage: who cares!

Am I off my hat here or is not more fuel and air going to help?

Properly done, pods/stacks, open pipes, and jetting should result in more top end, but probably only by a few HP. I think my bike is maybe 5 MPH faster with said mods.

I'd guess that a serious percentage of bikes so modified are not running as well as they could be; maybe not even as well as stock.
