400f oil cooler plumbing without sandwich plate
« on: February 23, 2015, 02:00:29 pm »
Hello All, first post here!

I am in the process of stage 2 on a good friends honda cb400f. Stage 1 was a Yoshimura 466 kit, cometic head gasket, mild porting, dyna ignition and 3 ohm coils, and a JMCA/Yoshimura exhaust.

Stage 2 is adding CR26 carbs (re-racked with the throttle linkage between carb 1 and 2), a Web Cams hot street cam, CB750 oil pump mod, and an oil cooler.

My question for you is, what is the best way to plumb the oil cooler WITHOUT using the typical sandwich plate? The Yoshimura exhaust does not allow you to remove the oil filter with it in place, and there is no room to extend it out, and buying a more friendly exhaust is not an option. I am fine with drilling and tapping a passage, or welding a bung on somewhere, I would just like to see if anyone else has done something similar that I can learn from.
Thank you!

It's not answering your question, but is there room for a plate and convert to a narrower spin-on filter?

The way i did it with the yoshimura exhaust is to weld a bung into the oil filter housing to accept a AN6 fitting. plus also a bung to accept a the AN6 fitting at the oil pump side.
looking at the pump, the lower l/h side is the main feed to the oil filter, i welded a TTR fitting into the pump to re-direct the feed. this blanked off the feed to the filter. you could also remove the pressure switch and use this as the main feed (drill and re tap, M12x1.0. if using my TTR fittings)
So:
From oil pump to oil cooler.
From oil cooler to oil filter
Don't have any decent pics but here are a couple i found.

Note: I also used my TTR400 uprated oil pump to increase the flow.

My solution to the same issue (tight pipes) was slightly different.  Pics are here - http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=83937.0

Thanks guys.

Tell me more about the spin on filter idea: How much room does a sandwich plate and spin on filter take up? If it is the same as the stock +1/4", that would probably be the easiest way.

If that does not work, I will do what Kevin outlined.

Thanks again!

Slightly off topic, but I notice you say "CR26 carbs (re-racked with the throttle linkage between carb 1 and 2),"  Are you sure that's aok?  I've only ever seen them on a 400f (mine included) with the throttle linkage outside carb#4.

We are talking Keihin CRs, presumably?

The plate is 1.5" thick, the Honda filter is 3.25"OD x 3.25" long. Best picture I could find.

Tim,
Anything is possible, but its not easy. You have to tap the #2 carb for the cable plate screw, remove the carb shaft and drill a new hole for the roll pin on the linkage. Im not finished yet, but I learned about it trolling this forum!

Thanks Bwaller for the pic and dimensions, Ill measure the stock filter and cross my fingers that it is as long as your setup!

Hey is this Tower from twinline? If so just wanted to say he is a good dude. He helped tweakin and I dial in our CR carbs with the help of Doctor D on his shops dyno.
