Hello from Colorado CB500 K2
« on: February 07, 2015, 08:56:32 PM »
So Ive been lurking on here since I bought my sohc/4 back in september, and I must say I have found this forum extremely useful. A little background on me and the bike, I bought a 73 CB500 K2 that at the time the previous owner claimed he had fully rebuilt  ::) , I am still currently looking for evidence of the rebuild.  I am a current college student and this is my first motorcycle, but I accumulated all of my mechanical knowledge by working on air-cooled volkswagens and from working as a tech in a Firstone for a while. When I bought the bike the motor leaked like a siv, the carbs also leaked, it smoked like a chimney, the idiot lights didn't work, and the previous owner removed the turn signals as a fashion statement. I bought the bike despite all of the above because it had a powder coated frame and a freshly painted tank and Im not much of a painter. Fast forward to now and the bike is in great shape Ive given it the 3000 mile tune up about 5 times in the last 300 miles, the engine doesn't leak a drop of oil, I rebuilt and tuned the carbs for elevation using a 4 gauge synchrometer, repaired and remedied all of the electrical short comings, and put a new tank and side covers on because the old tank had so many pin holes the only thing keeping the gas in was the new paint. So what has prompted this post is I went to replace the valve guide seals and found that the top of every single valve guide was cracked or broken and now I need to find a good reputable machinist to rebuild my head for me. I would do the job myself but as I understand it new valve guides should be pressed in and the the valve seat recut, and I don't have the budget for both a press and a lathe. So if any one could point me in the direction of some one who could rebuild my head in Colorado for a reasonable price I'd really appreciate it. Oh and since you had the patience to read the whole post here are a few pictures of the bike. The first picture was when I bought it, the last two are as it sits in my shop right now.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I was considering Hondaman due to the high praise he receives all over this site, but I wasn't sure if A. he was in Colorado and B. if he would want to bother with something other than a 750.
Also Im perplexed as to what could have caused the tops of the valve guides to break, I was pretty gentle removing the old seals but on a few I would pull the seal out just using my fingers and a rag and the whole top of the guide would be snapped off in the seal. My theory is that the head got way to hot and caused the cast iron guides to expand too rapidly.

So I got in touch with Hondaman and he recommended I get a different cylinder head to have refurbished to cut down on costs. Thanks for the great advice about contacting Hondaman, Im hoping to have this thing back on the road by springtime.

Yeah, sad...while I like to try to save them, this one's the victim of someone doing unspeakable things to it! A newer head will be MUCH cheaper than trying to save this one.
See SOHC4shop@gmail.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.
