Oil quanity in sump
« on: February 23, 2015, 09:30:20 PM »
How much oil goes from the oil tank down to the sump if the engine is completely drained. We just had the motor out of my friends 75 750 F. Oil did not get to left side of engine, scoring the cam. Found out the oil orfice for that side got blocked. we did rings and valves and fixed everything else. Back in the frame and added oil. we were spinning it over without the plugs to build some oil pressure. We were not getting any. Taking the cap off the oil tank and it was full to the top. pulled the drain plug and got a trickle coming out. pulled the sump back off and then pulled the oil pump back off and oil started flowing great. Could there be a blockage in the pump. I allways thought when filling with oil it drains from the oil tank thru the pump and adding some sort of quantity to the sump. Is this correct.

The pump can air lock if it's dry. Sounds like what happened.

I like to fill the oil galley on the right side through the plug hole using a gauge adapter and some pipe fittings.  I have pressurized the engine with an automobile air conditioning oil cylinder before starting it too.

You gotta prime that pump. Submerge it in oil and rotate the gear until no more air bubbles come out. Then put it back in, it's messy :)

After that open the side galley cap on the engine, tilt the bike a bit and using a funnel, fill that until oil comes out.

Then press the starter a few times with the kill switch on until the oil light goes off.

I ran I to the same issue. This way works!

I use compressed air to prime the oil pump. Fill oil tank and tape oil tank filler with ductape. Then add some compressed air through the ductape while cranking the engine. Remove the sparkplug to ease cranking. Works like a charm as long as you don´t add too much air (leaves a bubbly oil mess under your bike...).

+1 to Elan and Don R.
I'll also add pour in 1/3 quart each into #1 & #4 intake tappet holes.
The oil will pool under the cam a little bit to splash around the top end, and it'll fill the drain passages with oil.

+1 to all.

Use assembly lube.
Prime your pump. Some may drain out of it, inevitable due to gravity.
Fill your tank to the full mark. It's not going to drain and supply unless there is suction to open the oil stopper valve ie pressure on the other side.
Pour the rest of the 3.7 quarts through the front valve adjuster holes so it will drain down into the sump.

None of this will help a blocked oil orifice though.
