Hello from Miami!
« on: February 23, 2015, 10:39:02 AM »
Hi everyone. Just picked up a 500 four of the K2 variety last week. I paid a pretty penny for it, but I am more than happy with the purchase. It's a solid little bike that is an absolute blast to ride. The speedometer reads at 14.5k but it wasn't working when I handed over the cash, so who knows how many it really has. The PO bought it in pieces from a another person who had the tank and side pieces painted.

It's a pretty blue color, but the tank has an airbrushed scene of a comet hitting another celestial body...It's not my style, at all. I recently Plasti-Dipped the tank and side pieces flat black as a place holder for a proper painting job. (pictures coming soon)

So now onto the few questions I have. I am assuming it is probably due for a tune up (if you don't know its better to assume one is needed, right?). The PO did plugs, oil, and a new battery already, so I was looking at going all in a bench sync of the carbs. But I know nothing, like nothing, about carbs, how they work, what does what, etc. I have been reading a TON on this site, and others, and a bench sync looks pretty straight forward. Should I give it a go and pray I don't screw up? Or is it best to take it somewhere and have them do it?

Secondly, she's leaking oil. I know, broad statement, but I know it's coming from the bottom of the engine. I can't get an exact area of the leak, but bottom rear is an accurate descriptor. Are these engines known to leak from here? Is there a seal that needs replacing or gasket that needs attention? Again, total novice when it comes to these bikes so don't feel like you'd be talking down to me by speaking very plainly.

Any comments would be welcomed, and thanks for looking!

Welcome.

The leaky may be and most likely from shifter shaft seal. Fairly common leak if it's never been replaced. Next is oil pump.  Both are behind that shifter cover.  Now is good time to clean and inspect all in that area.

+1, use Gunk engine cleaner to get it nice and clean and then you may be able to see where the leak is. Some guys put white baby powder on the area and the leak will be very easy to spot.

If the bike is running fine, you dont need a bench sync of the carbs. That is done after the carbs are disassembled.

Downlowd the manual here, and look in the maint section for 3000 mile tune up.

If you dont know when the last time it was done, it may be time.
On the other hand, if its' running good, enjoy it!

PS. I love visiting South Beach.  I go there occasionally, my sister lives an hour north in Delray Beach.

Good to know. I know nothing about changing seals, let alone a pump. Fairly easy?

Small update, nothing major by any means. I tore the flat black off. While it does help protect the paint underneath, it just doesn't fit my vision for the bike at all. I'm into black at all, so it just didn't sit right with me.

I was reading through my Clymer manuals, and I was planning on doing the chain tensioner but I can't for the life of me figure it out. For the 500 I need to have the 1st cylinder in a certain position, and all it does is tell me to look through a peep hole to check it...All good and great if you know how to access that peephole, but I don't.

I also need a new chain I think. Getting a lot of noise at idle or letting off the throttle when moving. So at this point I will probably take it to a shop and call it a day. I can do chains on bicycles really quickly, but I don't have the tools to do a motorcycle chain. Anyone in Miami or S. Florida that can recommend a good shop for the 3k maintenance, as well as find and fix the oil leak?
