Thank!  Yeah, the Hyper was an absolute hooligan.  It was a fantastic little canyon carver that taught me a lot about bike control, braking, and smoothly using throttle as you could get in trouble very quickly if you weren't focused.  A 75 mile range and the supermoto riding position made it impractical for longer trips though.

Dude, I have an easy fix for the unsightly surface rust on the fork tubes. 

Go to the auto-parts store and get a roll of the chrome tape they use for the bottom of pickup trucks (runs about 6 bucks). 
Slide the headlight ears all the way to the bottom, wrap the top part of each tube.
Then slide them to the top.  Wrap the bottom of that area and then slide the headlight ears to the middle to cover the seam. 
Presto!  Much cheaper than $250 for new fork tubes.

Chrome tape?! Sacrilege.  If you are not going to replace them, I would remove the rust as best as you can (with sanding and/or foil) and paint with Rustoleum.

Haha, no foil tape, don't worry.  Since that photo was taken I have already removed the rust with 00 steel wool and lightly coated with marvel mystery oil.  I'm planning on replacing the front end eventually with modern forks, so no reason to spend too much time on the aesthetics.

If you paint them, they will get scratched all to sh!t when you slide them in.  I cleaned the #$%* out of mine with steel wool and used CLR.  it doesn't really rust, but it it discolored.  the chrome tape looks just fine.   You can't tell it's there.
