Seat Stencil - What Paint or Dye to Use?
« on: October 11, 2006, 07:19:16 PM »
I had a friend make me some stencils so I can add the lettering to the back of a seat I had covered. This is supposed to look stock, so I'd like to get the correct "white" dye or paint for use on black vinyl. Can one of you steer me in the right direction, please?

Who here has done it? The stencil is very tacky, so I should not have any bleed-through problems (runs, ect). Also since this is not for gloss, the coats can be very light and applied in several thin coats so there are no runs as there is no need for a "wet" coat.

Also, any tips on application would be appreciated. I would think it has to have some elasticity so it doesn't peel/crack when the vinyl stretches and bends. I'm stumped and my friend is into graphics reproduction - not paints.

Thanks,
Gordon

hit the net, mang...

i'd start with google and hunt some vinyl workers/manufacturers...there's probably a whole world of dudes who care nothing more than getting the paint right on vinyl ready to serve you.

Maybe get a crappy old seat and experiment. I've stenciled on clothes before and most spray paints hold up pretty well on vinyl. Just got to hold it well away or else it drips.

I have done two on my seats "HONDA" stencil.
Yamaha has one paint that is OK I cannot remember the color code but its like a silver.
Use a pair of tweezers to pull te stencil off when dry
Sticks well.

if you covered it with vinyl,go to a auto paint store and try to buy a small quantity of vinyl dye, might be hard to get small quanitities tho.they can also help with the other items you should have to dye vinyl like a product to pre-treat the vinyl with.

I agree w/Hop on a Honda - it should be silver(gray), not white. I use spray vinyl paint available at most auto parts stores.

You could also hit up your local auto paint supply store (the place that the body shops go) and hit them up for info. More than likely they're total paint snobs and will be happy to enlighten you if you kiss a little ass.

Ok, I confess.

It was not a Honda seat I asked you guys about. But, I never said it was.  :)

I need white letters. This is one seat that I could not find a NOS replacement for and I could not find the correct cover at Speed and Sport, on the web, on EBay, nor my good friend Rick Brett of RB's who does all of my Kawasaki stuff, or any of the regular places. Sudco has one listed, but he says it's 3-4 months for delivery. I took the old one off and had an exact replacement made (panels, inserts, everything) but he could not make the letters come out of his sewing machine...
 :)

Guys, it's a Yamaha. I've been whoring around....
