Is that a crack?
« on: March 01, 2015, 05:21:47 AM »
Dear people,

I'm restoring a cb550f.
I have stumbled upon something that seems to be a crack OR....
Is it normal?

Bike and focus on " crack "

Cheers

Are you asking about the frame?  I do not see a crack.

He might be talking about the back of the lower case.

I think he means the case on the back left side of the motor? Just above the oil pan.

Tough to tell with the pic... Why not pull the pan and see if it is cracked on the inside too?

Mine had JB weld slathered all over that exact corner on my 500. I pulled the pan and chipped it all off and everything looked fine. I think the PO just wanted to stop an oil leak.

I'll double check my '78 550 but I am 99% sure that's from casting. Not a crack and nothing to worry about.

If, in fact, you're talking about the case just above the oil pan seam.

Yes, it's from casting on the 550. Mine has the exact same blemish. Nothing to worry about.

Look like a crack. Really bad casting? Look exact the same as the other known case.

I had to look at mine because I couldn't believe that was a casting defect.  Yup, I have that same diagonal line.  Hidden under about 40 years worth of spooge of course.

Yip, same as mine. Normal.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

Aha, i was hoping for it to be a " bad " casting issue.
Thanks to all for the answers.

Cheers,
