KO hub bearing issue...
« on: February 14, 2015, 09:12:33 AM »
Having a bit of a rear hub bearing issue on this 10/69 KO. Put in new rear wheel bearings last fall and that hub bearing in the pic was loose. Staked the edge hoping that would tighten it. Noticed when I got the wheel back on after new swingarm bearings there is a slight wobble in that rear wheel. Took it apart and find I can rotate that new bearing inside the hub with my fingers. It is that loose. Checked numbers and have the right one. Never had this issue before. I did notice when I took the old one out she came out very easy. Is there a way to snug this up or should I just take the hub into my bearing supplier and see if they can fit one tighter? Thanks for the advise...

Did a search and saw that Locktite might do the job. The post did not mention blue or red. I think first I will go to my bearing supplier on Monday and see if he has something with a little larger OD and same IS. The hole where the bearing sits is not elongated so if it spun it was not much.

I had the same problem with my K0.  I used sleeve seal, its what they use when the re-sleeve cylinders.  I haven't ridden the bike yet so I'm not sure if it worked.  Let me know if you can get a larger bearing thats probably the best way to go.  Especially with your early two hole hub.

I was gonna mention that. That's how Norton installed roller bearings in the gearbox!!! Use RED.

I may give the Locktite a try. I would imagine it best to rough up the inside of the hub and outside of the bearing so the Locktite can bite better.

Suggestion.............set the wheel (with or without tire) on a truing stand with the axle and the new (slightly loose) bearing riding on the axle but not yet installed.  Then set indicators to true the wheel as best as possible before applying the red Lok-Tite and sliding the bearing into the hub. I'm thinking that would give you the best chance of 'centering' the new bearing.

(For my future reference..)

If one was to use Loctite in this situation.... what "Loctite" are we talking about?   I assume you would not use the standard red "271" thread locker on a hub bearing... or would you?

Would the proper selection be something like Loctite 609 retaining compound ?

Or the 620??

Well, you are mounting a bearing, I like the one that says bearing mount.

Spoke to a friend who works on this stuff in a NAPA machine shop. He said they not only used the Loctitie bearing mount, but also scored the inside of the area where the bearing seats. Got it done today and she sure seems to have the normal tight fit. Put the unit on the swingarm to center. Now I will let the bearing mount set up for 24 hours and she should be good to button up.
