750 countershaft gear orientation

Part #14. Mine slid off the countershaft by accident while handling. I THINK it's installed correctly but, not sure.
I know the gear will inststall/fit on the shaft either way round, but is there a way to tell which is correct? Any identifying
marks or offset differences in the hub area? Am I missing something? Don't want overthink the issue, but don't want to have to split the cases again either. Any information is much welcome.

I just commented about this in a different thread:

tl;dr: one side of the gear has a taller flange near the "hub".  That side should point away from the other gears.  See link for pics.

mystic, I'm thinking that the gear in your link is the one next to the one I am concerned with. Mine is on the very end of the shaft, just before the countershaft goes into the countershaft roller bearing that is mounted in the case. Your thoughts?

Ah you're right, you mean the final drive gear.  If I recall correctly, that gear is symmetrical, so there's not so much a right way and a wrong way to install it.

You may be able to get some clues as to it's original orientation by looking for wear patterns on the gear surfaces, but I don't believe it's orientation matters.

Just had these in my hands yesterday.
#14 from your picture (final drive gear) can be installed either way.  Its #4 next to it, that has a specific orientation.

Thanks guys. Hopefully I'll get it back the right way it was, and if not, it won't be noisey from running it the other way round.

On my K8 there was a difference, which can be seen if you put a straight edge across and one side inner flange was level and other recessed.

If you look at sectional drawing in manual you can see the difference.

I did that with the straight edge, but couldn't see any difference on mine (k5). Maybe the k8 is different?
