Question about oil filter change in 1978 cb750K
« on: March 02, 2015, 05:58:02 PM »
I recently acquired a 1978 cb750K.  I was doing the oil and oil filter change.  My question is, where does the little spring go.  Does it go between the filter housing and the oil filter or does it go between the oil filter and the engine block.  I have checked several diagrams and it shows the spring to be between the filter housing and the filter.   However when I look on youtube, a video shows the spring between the filter and engine block.  When I took the filter housing off, it was also in that same order.  Does it matter where the spring goes?  Any help would be appreciated.  Also the previous owner had installed an oil cooler .

I put my spring in the filter housing, then washer, then filter, then mount onto engine.  Don't know about everybody else.

I agree with goldarrow and Stev-o . Looks to me like the spring should push and hold the filter against the engine. The washer goes between the spring and filter. I think the washer is to protect the end of filter end from the end of the spring. . They are lost by the po most of the time and it will work without the washer.

The "bolt" that holds the housing down has a bypass valved to allow oil flow if the filter gets clogged. Sounds like a bad idea on first thought, but unfiltered oil is a lot better for the bearings than no oil.
The spring and washer locate the filter so that this valve works. If the filter covers the cross holes in the bolt furthest from the engine, the valve can not work.
I doubt that any of us would neglect maintenance to where the oil filter clogs badly enough to need that valve, but it shouldn't be disabled by putting the spring against the engine block.

Spring and washer are easy to forget when draining oil and filter into the garbage bag.... I had to purshase springs a couple of times. Last restore 2013 I reinvented the washer when reading the manual...

I did run mine without spring at least one oil change, not saying the spring is not needed of course.
