The frame hump...
« on: March 03, 2015, 02:08:27 AM »
Has anyone fitted a cafe type seat to a Honda CB without cutting the rear frame hump off as per the photo below? If so what seat did you use? Was it bought off the rack. E.G Biltwell Cafe Seat.

Yes.  There is no reason to cut that off.  Nearly any bum stop seat will fit over that frame brace and it is an important part of the rear frame's structural strength.  Sure you can weld in a hoop, but that is a lot of extra work for no performance improvement and most lose rear tire clearance in the process and are left with a hacked up, worthless frame.

Many "off the shelf" cafe style seats do have a hump, but very few align with the stock frame "hump". Further, the seat hoop has a slight concave radius to it and thus most fiberglass units don't sit flush to the stock hoop.

While there is truth to the tire clearance issue when replacing the stock hump with a flat pan, it is also most unlikely that the tire will contact the pan becuase cafe bikes seldom have a passenger compressing the rear shocks sufficiently to produce the conflict.

Lastly, to install a fiberglass seat, you'll have to remove the stock seat hinge plate and lock plate anyway, thereby rendering your frame "hacked and useless" in some eyes. Many install a new closed hoop because they prefer the look of it over the swaged butt ends from the factory. Better rear shocks and no passenger obviates the stock frame "hump". But a cross brace is advisable for suspension benefits.

The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. You can leave the hump in place. There are seats out there that fit as a stock seat. Check this link, i hope it works. I'm attaching pics of the seat on my cb500. http://www.ebay.com/itm/291341547592?redirect=mobile

Cheers all for your input. I have been down in the shed tonight taking the cover off the spare seat that came with the bike.

I think I will have a go at shaving the foam down and making a cowl.
