Need good solution for leaking carb bowl overflow tube
« on: March 10, 2015, 12:34:36 PM »
So my 350 carb bowl overflow tube has a hairline crack running up the entire tube. I'm wondering what is going to be the best solution to save this carb bowl, the crack is parallel to the tube as if the tube split along about 80% of its length.

Thanks.

Looks like it's split 100% of the length of the tube.

The tube is brass which is a good thing. They do crack which is a bad thing. The most permenant fix is to solder the crack closed. You will need to clean the part very well, and using a soldering gun or iron simply solder it closed. You can use the flux used in plumbing if you have some to clear up any oxide you may have missed.

People use JB Weld or plastic fuel line and brass tubing slipped over the existing tube. A reasonably done solder job is permanent and solder is not attacked by gasoline.

Ive used heat shrink for wiring as a temporary fix and it lasted until i switched carbs which was almost a year. Nothing more permanent than a temporary fix.

Wouldn't I still have to solder it on?

not necessarily.  if its split, it has to have expanded a small amount because of this, which should be enough to hold it in place.
I cant remember if its 3mm or 3.5 mm?
search online for ##mm ID brass hobby tube.

I hope it doesn't leak. Stev-o might have the right idea.

Well for 34 bucks I've got a shiny float bowl headed my way from eBay. I think that's probably my best bet.
