found old yoshi 4-1!... pics!
« on: October 12, 2006, 06:34:30 PM »
regarding my first post http://www.sohc4.us/forums/index.php?topic=14328.0, here are some pics of the pipes installed.  the tail piece is definitely yoshi and is stamped "750K", but i'm not positive the headers are.  i couldn't get the tail piece flange to line up with the rear pegs mount, hence the coat hanger wire there for reinforcement.  anyone ever have this problem?  i think my only options are to make a bracket, or to cut some material off the end of the header and the front of the tail piece.

the header fit perfectly into the cylinder head, it does seem like the tail piece is misaligned... what's going on?

think of all the weight that could be saved by replacing all bolts with twisted coat hanger wire. :D

Yes, I had that problem and I made this bracket, instead of shortening the pipe.  Sorry about the quality of the pic.

That is awsome.  I just picked up a MAC exhaust for my 550 a short time ago and it looks like MAC may have copied the Yoshi headers.  Great looking setup.

i found mine for a $100cad, they were unused but they needed a little clean up.  btw, they make your bike sound like an f1 race car... no kidding.  although, i am a little worried about the attention they create specifically with the po' po'.

i will probably make a bracket... easier than cutting the pipes.

I know what you mean about the F1 race car sound.  My pipes roar, especially starting around 6000 RPMs.  My wife told me that she could hear me coming from a good 1/2 mile away and she was in the house!  My neighbor, Jon, has a bike also and he says that sometimes when I crack open the throttle he can hear my bike four stop lights away.  When I am on the bike, it isn't really that loud... maybe my earplugs have something to do with that.  Those Yoshi exhausts are the bomb!

Where did you get the Yoshi pipe from? Are they in production, or am I going to have to search eBay to find one?

yeah... CAD means Canadian Dollers.

this local guy had bought them in the late 70's and never installed them.  he didn't get around to selling them until now.  he left a note on another 750k bike adn that owner gave me the number.

as far as i can tell, you can't buy these pipes new.

I always hear about the "Yosh" pipes, and have often wondered what was so "special" about them.  What makes the "Yoshimura" pipes different and so coveted.  Are they engineered any different than say a Kerker or MAC?  The material?  What?   ???  ???

From what I understand, the Yoshi pipes were developed and engineered with high performance in mind.  The header pipes were mandrel bent in a configuration that allowed all of the exhaust gases, from each of the cylinders, to escape freely, but still allow just enough back pressure to aide performance.  The steel used to construct the pipes was able to keep the heat in the pipe, thus allowing the gases to exit more cleanly. Of course, the nearly open (straight through) design of the “muffler” would allow a bike revving at 9K to expel all of its gases thus enabling better performance.  The design of the muffle element also allowed for a greater amount of ground clearance on the racetrack when scraping your knees in the tight turns.
