SOHC4 website Jinxed ?
« on: March 08, 2015, 09:52:28 PM »

I had trouble even finding the sohc forum today, first with mozilla and then with IE. I get a page that says this:

Welcome to nginx!

If you see this page, the nginx web server is successfully installed and working. Further configuration is required.

For online documentation and support please refer to nginx.org.
Commercial support is available at nginx.com.

Thank you for using nginx.

I figured that it was on my computer but I can't find it and it still pops this page when I put in the web address. I have not clicked on the link where it wants to configure the 'account' or whatever. If I search yahoo!sucks! I get the main page which brings up jinx. If I go to the tech forum just below I finally get in. Is the website being hacked or am I?

I have followed web search advice but I am hesitant to install any new spyware. Anyone have any clues?  Anyone dealt with nginx before?

Thanks, the lady friend was sure that I had 'Jinxed'  her computer, which I cannot plausibly deny. I still get the nginx when I type the forum address into the address bar.  What was confusing is that I got it on Mozilla and IE.

All day today I was getting the ' Error 404' message...

That came up , too a few times, but I think it was this nginx that said it "was successfully installde and needed to be configured" and had a hot link that I of course didn't click on.

nginx is the webserver that runs in front of the PHP webapp that is the Simple Machines Forum. Glenn pointed out that the hosting service that these forums use were doing scheduled maintenance and he missed that notification. When they were done, nginx started back up, but the PHP webapp didn't. That's why you were seeing the nginx default pages (404 pages on nginx are basically a nice way to say this site or part of it is currently down).

I felt like ngix wanted me to click and download something to my [friends] computer. A websearch showed that many consider it a proxy server virus.

Yeah fiddy when I went to log on to the site late yesterday the same nginx info came up on my computer also. Had never seen that before and thought maybe some type of virus had got on my computer. I had forum member Johnie's email so I shot him a line and he said he was having the same issues also. Thanks for the fast reply John. Yes I know Im addicted to this forum and when I cant get my daily sohc4 fix I get a little on edge ;D

My big desk top works fine now but the wife's laptop still comes up nginx at 2:00 PM EST ON 3/09.   ??? Hmm, both run Mozilla I believe.

Clear out the cache on the browser on the laptop. You can also try a hard refresh (hold down shift key, then refresh the page).

You never hear of any major cyber busts unless it is a government website or computer that is hacked.  Is it really that hard to go find these fcukers and seize their ability to do this crap?

Depends really, generally its not so easy to break into any modern day infrastructure. But those who do manage to get through are hard to track down as they obviously know what they're doing and cover their tracks well.

Also, just FYI, we weren't hacked (details in the link in post #2 above).

I had to go through a google search to get on then deleted my original bookmark link and made a new one. It's all cool now.

I deleted the original bookmark and put in a new one, back to normal on the laptop per Bailgang's suggestion.
