What's it Worth? 1973 (mostly) CB 750 K///1976 CB400F
« on: October 24, 2014, 07:07:27 AM »
After a lot of thought and reflection and contemplation... 73 750 and 76 400F are going up for sale in the near future

I am looking for some real advice on what they might be worth on the open market. Details are as follows:

Mostly stock 73 CB750K
Comstar wheels and brakes Single disc rear, dual disc front are off of a 77 750F
My mechanic believes it has the 836 kit in it due to performance level (pushes well into 120 mph with no issues). He also suspects it has a performance cam due to the timing setup (I can't confirm either of these as it hasn't been apart and I am not a pro)
Carbs have been jetted
Fork seals replaced
Steering damper
V&H 4-1 exhaust
New Progressive rear shocks in 2011 (still have original rear springs)
New Bridgstone tires this summer (approx) 500 miles on them
Speedo doesn't work
Signal lights are in a box, left rear lens is broken, wiring is still on the bike
End is broken on clutch lever......(this and the broken lens are from a tipover in the garage)
Has engine guards installed

Stock 1976 CB400F
Partial tear down/clean up in 2012
Original 4 -1 exhaust
Brakes - Master cylinder/rear brake torn down rebuilt in 2012
Carbs rebuilt, balanced and synch'd professionally in 2012
New air filter, fork seals (uninstalled)
Dunlop tires replaced last year (less than 200 miles)
Headlight is burnt out
Horn doesn't work
Working out an intermittent signal light issue (should be an easy fix for someone who knows what they are doing!!)
1 small tear in original seat

Pics to follow:

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

What part of the world are you? On the pacific coast there is a decent premium on these bikes. I've shopped for 400Fs before in the Seattle area. In good clean condition (good paint job as well) They are posted anywhere from $2400 up to $3400 although most over $3000 don't seem to sell very fast if at all unless it's super low miles. They get posted over and over on CL. I could've bought one for $2400 that had 11000 miles last year but I decided I wanted a 550F instead. If you're planning on EBAY then you would have to factor in a ~$600 shipping charge.

Go to eBay and use advanced search to filter for sold listings.  That essentially
The new blue book.  But a 74 cb750k, mostly stock, 47k miles,  just sold here in Birmingham off cl for $1500, in less than a week. Very motivated seller, knew he was asking low.

I am on the east coast of Canada....these bikes are a little harder to find out here....smaller market makes it harder to price

There is also a 1976 400F Parts bike....pretty much complete (with the original pipes) minus the fuel tank to throw in as well.

I am on the east coast as well and from what I have seen that would be more of a resto mod,the collectors wont want it and unless you can find someone who really wants it,the 400 will be worth more than the 750 case they are not that common here.there is a 75 on kijji that the guy is trying to sell for 2500 and is having no luck.was offered a running 550 for 150 so prices are not big in ns YET.bill

Find out about the frame. On the 750.. Not being able to go back to stock without welding and replacing frame bits..can be..a dealbreaker....if buyer has restore in mind..
So if it's a custom bike.. Different situation than stock..

750K - $3000.00
400F - $3000.00 including the parts bike.

If it is a K frame, they have cut off the rear peg mount brackets. And added a rear master cyl mount.
Not a huge deal, but pita if you ever go back to stock.  Looks like a pretty nice 750..

for that kind of money I would want to know what is in the engine, the description matches one that was in my area, the mech thought there was 836 and cam but was not positive.a buddy just sold a MINT 78 for 2800 so I think 3000 might be a bit much unless the person just has to have it.not dissing your bike just telling you what I have seen.billp
what area you in ?

I'll resurrect this old thread, with: To me, the 400F, minus the parts bike was worth $2300. Needed some cosmetic stuff, but the old scoot was solid. Knowing what he paid for it, and what he put into it, looks like a win-win.

I got it home, and did this to it:
New handlebars (the stock ones were likely dealer installs, high ones--this is a USA model)
New OEM grips
New headlight (the low beam was burnt out, and there was a bad connector under the tank)
New clutch cable
New muffler (DSS repro)
New seat (repro)
New paint and decals (base/ 2k clear, and repro decals)
Relaced/trued both wheels
New Hagon shocks
New fork seals, Race Tech springs, and emulators
New horn

This is the result, with accompanying ear to ear grins, of course:

So glad you are enjoying the bike....and it looks beautiful!! You did a lot of the stuff I just couldn't find the time for. Just happy that it won't become a "garage queen" and not get ridden very often.

Just to update everyone else.....the 400F and the 750K are now sold. My apologies to the guys who were looking for parts....life got complicated over the holidays and for my own sanity it just made sense to put everything else in life on hold for now. Hope no one feels burned if I didn't get back to them.

I still have a bunch of 400F stuff but I am not going to post until I can commit to following through on it.

To who?  Who bought them?  If Canadian prices are that low I might need to hook up my trailer.
