750 K3 - oil pan drop, screen clean and service questions
« on: March 09, 2015, 07:11:56 AM »
Dropped my oil pan for the first time this weekend and wanted to ask a few questions. Feel free to point me to a thread if this has been covered. I've had the bike for a little over a year. I don't think it had been on the road for about 15 years before I got it. I did a few initial oil changes when I got it running, but this was the first time dropping the pan. Oil looked good in those initial oil changes - no obvious metal, etc.

There was some debris in the pan, but not metal. And some goo hanging from the oil screen. I was expecting worse to be honest. My main issue was getting the oil screen filter out. Is there a good technique for this? I ended up bending a section of the outer rim of the screen. I was able to form it back to where it seemed to make a good seal when re-installed. I had attempted to order a new one from Honda, but they were not available. Also, I used Brakleen to clean out pan and filter housing. Is this acceptable? Wasn't sure what else to use around the house. I used it on the filter screen too, but tried not to get on rubber edge. Lastly, I installed a new Honda gasket, but did not coat in oil first. I just read that tip on the forum this morning.

Anyway, check out pics and give any feedback. It all went ok. I would take pipes off next time. I had no leaks from oil service, but plenty from oil on pipes.

Is that gunk rubbery silicone, bad stuff inside an engine. I think I would have left the screen on the pump.

The proper way to clean that screen is to just wipe it off, or pull the pump and disassemble it for cleaning and new seals.
Besides an oil soaked gasket, use thread sealer on all the pan bolts.  A few of them live submerged in the oil.

ekpent - The gunk on the screen didn't seem like silicone, it was like oil sludge.

flybox1 - I thought the screen had to be removed to be cleaned/serviced? Mine was real tight and was hard to get out. Had to use a lot of force and bent that one spot. Do you think it's OK to leave it like it is until another 3k and then put a new one in? I didn't use thread sealer on bolts either. I guess if pan doesn't leak, I'm OK with not having coated gasket in oil this time?

If it would be best to replace that screen. I do have to pull pipes in a few weeks and I could do it then.

I dont know man, would you run a marathon with a dysfunctional heart?  ;D
Id hate for that to fail.  Something might get sucked in, ruin the pump, and starve your engine of oil
Thats kinda bad  ;D

Yeah I kinda hate that it's sitting in there like that. It's good and tight and the screen is fully intact with the metal/rubber rim outer edge. But I'm going to pull and replace. Better safe than sorry. Sucks that I had everything ordered in advance but this.

What's a good thread sealer to use? Permatex or other?

You can buy new screen from somebody here, username Elan I think.

He offers all kind of goodies for oil pumps.

You got the genuine Honda oil pan seal, so you don't need to muck about with thread sealant and oiling the gasket. I have dropped the pan on mine twice and re-installed with the Honda gasket - dry - and it hasn't leaked. I doubt they did any of that at the factory.

The K0 manual says to clean the oil pump screen using kerosene every 12,000 miles, and has a picture of it removed for said purpose. Nothing about pulling the oil pump. It's possible to get it out with a selection of small flat-bladed screwdrivers, but it ain't easy.

I assume my strainer screen had never been removed and that's why it was so difficult. Are the Honda pan gaskets a one-time-only affair? If I drop pan to install a new strainer screen, could I re-use? Or best to just buy another? By the time I get around to it, the gasket will have been on for about two weeks with minimal mileage.

Yes, if its still in good form, you can reuse your pan gasket.
