favorite brake pads and where to get them?
« on: March 15, 2015, 11:06:10 AM »
I have a couple bikes that don't stop as well as I'd like them to. One is my sandcast so double discs or new rotors aren't on my list for it. On my hot rod K0 750  however, anything goes.

I can't comment about how well they work and fit all all that - but Flybox directed me to Slingshot Cycles.

I got mine from vintagecb750. My bike stops but I'm sure it could do with better pads. Following...

I'm looking at EBC organic kevlar, they're non galling on oem rotors. I wonder if they come with anti squealer devices.

EBC has a shopping list of pads, is everyone using organic/kevlar?  While shopping I found a deal on 3 sets of EBC organic kevlar pads for my goldwing or cb900c. $60 shipped. I still need to improve the cb750's.

I bought new last year locally in my town. SBS pads. These have a thick layer of black paint that I removed so the pads are not too tight inside the caliper.
Available here: http://4into1.com/sbs-front-brake-pads-502hf-honda-cb450-cb750/
They started to work rather well after I have used it during some hard brakings.

The bike had not been used for over 20 years so the front brake did not work, brake stucked and very hot.
I had to open the caliper, pump out the piston in outer position and cleaned it, sprayed lithium lube on it. Pressed it inwards, pumped it out again and some more lithium grease spray. Did that some times.
Then SBS pads without paint and copper paste under each pad. The plastic ring that followed the pads could I not get space for.

I've been very happy with EBC pads and shoes. The sintered ones will squeal sometimes. The regular ones stop just as well.

I've had to sand off the black paint from around the edges of the pads a couple of times to get them to move freely in the caliper.

A good master cylinder (the David Silvers Spares repro works great and is cheap), braided lines and EBC pads makes a NOTICEABLE difference.
Sand the drum in the rear with some 800 grit and EBC shoes and you have a great, stock looking brake set up.

I have ferodo pads on my F2 (but with F1 forks) and they work really good. (dual rotor)

On my K2 (single rotor) i installed an old set (new though) I had with a load of parts I bought and they are terrible...

Will change for ferodo as well, hope it stops a bit better then...

A lot of guys on the CBR forum who ride mostly street use EBC pads. They claim they're the best value for the money, and
that they have a reasonable service life.

I found some deals on EBC organic for the goldwing, the CB 750 pads are mostly retail pricing. I'm a big fan of stopping, a couple feet might save you a lot of grief. If they don't impress me I'll get something better. My 836 bike has a cam and ported heads, it's WAY better at going than stopping. I may sand down the stock ones and try again. I have parts for a K0 double disc but I noticed they are very early K0, they look like my sandcast's brakes.
My former F1 double disc front ruined me for anything less , it would squeal the tire during braking practice.

I see someone already mentioned them, but I'm interested to see how the SBS pads I bought work. I bought emgo shoes for the rear.

A brake dyno would be eye opening, I'm betting there is one somewhere.  I get a couple bike mags but don't remember much about braking articles.

Some sort of a servo-actuated switch to apply full pressure, half pressure, etc to the lever and see how quickly it stops? That would be awesome.

Good read so far but maybe people could elaborate on both dry and wet braking. I have a cb450 (same brakes as 500/550) and my EBC pads work fine while dry but are alarmingly ineffective in the wet, furthermore they start out doing nothing then grab hard as they dry....  so they are unpredictable too.

The only good thing about our front brake is that in the dry you can pull it like a fool without the danger of locking the front wheel. In the wet they are outright dangerous and force you to a defensive way of riding even more.

Use of brakes are often not the right way to avoid accidents. Riding a CB750 needs a drive that never trust the others on the roads or beside them. A bike rider need to have clairvoyant abilities. It will come with experience. Watch out for women and telephone maniacs.

I have mostly geared down and twisted the throttle and avoided cars suddenly doing bad manouvers. The road is wide, bike is narrow just keep the cool head and twist it. This was decades ago, before people driving and usng telephone.

Know before it happen that the cars will not see you or just ignore you and cross the road. Driving fast on country roads, be prepared to meet a slow going very wide tractor with shapr toool behind when the farmer is travelling from barn to the different fields. This is typical for some parts of the year. Prepare fields and harvest time.

Different animals that will jump infront of the  bike. A very loud 4-1 has helped me to avoid animals. Some small animals, just smash them, no idea to hit the trees beside the road in a bad attempt to avoid a rabbit, cat or other small meat.

Pewe, apart from the 4-1 suggestion that I loath ofcourse, you've made the best post this year so far.

Absolutely! All riders should take an advance rider's safety course if possible. Also, try motogymkhana! Here's a (DOHC) CB750 doing it. You don't have to be fast... just smooth.
