Does this look like metal?
« on: March 17, 2015, 03:57:50 PM »
Ok so just pulled my oil pan to find this! At first I thought metal.. But the engine rebuilt and only be on for about 1 min. My thought is its from the gasket glue I put on the screws to mount the pan. Eveything seemed cleaned but this seem really dirty. I tried feeling it and it doesn't "feel" like metal.

What was rebuilt? It could be natural "rubbings" from the new components bedding in.

It's hard to tell from the picture. But it almost looks like gasket or seal material. Does a magnet pick any of it up?

New bearings/rings/pistons/camshaft/rockers? What? We need to know then we can eliminate certain possibilities. We know it's magnetic so that narrows it to a ferrous metal.

First I just found out even though I primed the oil pump it had got stuck! So I'm glad I didn't run the engine that much! However I know this is the worst thing! I planed so hard to make sure this didn't happen so mad now! If this ruins the engine im going to scream!

New parts
-reborded to 849
-all around new chains
-new rods
-balanced and lightened crankshaft
-new tensioner
-and some other things I can't think of at the moment

If you properly lubed (assembly lube) your top end during the build, and poured oil up top to help prime the system, you're probably ok..

Yes I did that for sure! But then again already found metal in the engine so not sure at this point what to do! My thought is keep going get bike running and heated up then do another Oik change and hope I get all the metal out and there's no damage or this is going to be one expensive paper weight lol

If was starved of oil then the first place to look is at the camshaft area. You may spot something...or not through the tappet covers with the aid of a lamp

No just cleaned the bottom and head the top glass beaded. So is there any way to know if I did any damage or do I just have to pray. I'm going to let the bike warm up and then check to see what the oil looks like and if it's dirty I'll try and do another oil change and test again

Oil should spatter out with the engine running and the tappet covers removed.

Perhaps the metal in the pan came from the miss-assembled clutch? ::)

Thanks guys for all the help! At this point I've reinstalled the oil pump, also found that I believe the clutch cover was the issues pulled it off and pushed the bike in gear and it wouldn't move, so I put it back on and tested it and it seems to be working. I really think I installed the plates right. Now the Bike starts up with one kick and runs great! Needs a little tuning but sounds like a beast. I pulled the oil nut and checked the oil seemed to look fine, a little dark but not bad. So I have no clue where the metal came from and if its a big deal or not. At this point I'm praying that I had enough Oil and lube on it from the install. After I finish some other things I'll go for a test ride and see. Any thoughts or ideas on if this is a good idea?
