9 screw clutch cover repairable?
« on: March 15, 2015, 10:14:36 AM »
Hello, I am looking for an artist of a welder/fabricator who can repair a missing screw tab on a cb750 9 screw clutch cover. Hoping it can be functional again and look good also as it is the top screw.  I have a donor 10 screw clutch cover that tab can be cut off from for repair or maybe enough new material can be added and a new tab reshaped/drilled/smoothed? Anybody have tried this? Saw a gentleman with a previous post here advertising  Micro welding for carb. castings. Any thoughts?  Thanks, Paul.

That would probably be Jim French, French's Micro Welding, Dacula, Georgia. His handle on this forum is "Jim F". Send him a PM and see what he thinks.

Yeah that can be fixed and fixed well.  Had a similar issue on my oil pan when the drain bolt housing cracked almost breaking it off (I hadn't quite figured out why oil drain bolts shouldn't be tightened down HARD when they leak slightly :-[)  Took it to a machinist - welded it up nicely and dare say it's better than the original casting.

The aluminum color can be hard to match. Some guys have sliced rods out of a junk sprocket cover to help hide the repair.

Might be less expensive to get one on eBay. Common part

My understanding is the cover with the 9 screws holding it on were only on early 69 CB750 motors. Later covers have 10 screws. I would prefer to just replace cover, but they are  hard to find. If you know of one, I would gladly buy it. Thanks, Paul.

clutch cover will be hard to find,I sold 2 of them in the last year on eBay and they go for 400$ each

Your cover is very simple to rebuilt. If you want to sell it,I will give you 100$ for :)

Sandcast only, No one has said the S word yet. I assume you know 9 bolts is rare and indicate a sandcast engine?  They are hard to find. A 10 bolt cover will fit but of course isn't correct for a restoration.
Even if you find a replacement, it's worth fixing. A friend had an Inline 4 Indian engine repaired where a rod exited in the 60's. You can't tell by looking at the outside.  If the microwelding doesn't work out I can get his number, not cheap but worthwhile.
