400F clutch adjuster needed
« on: March 15, 2015, 12:19:48 PM »
Does anyone have any idea of where to get this clutch adjustment part for my '75 400F?  This one is solidly locked into  the cover and will not turn with a wrench even after soaking it in penetrating oil. I'm all out of adjustment at the handle bar so I need one on hand before trying anything more drastic to remove the original.  Thanks in advance.

They were the first place I checked, unfortunately, to no avail.  For such a simple part, it's been hard to locate.  Thanks for the reply, though.

Two pairs of vice-grips should do it. Also try tightening or tapping it to shock the threads.

When I needed one there were a couple new ones on Ebay. I was going to make it from a bolt but found it first.
I've had good luck tapping on the top, then add tension to the bolt while tapping on the outside of the aluminum with a soft hammer. Not hard enough to dent it, just shock the metal. It almost always unscrews, you have to know when to stop and repeat. 6 point wrench for sure. And I like seafoam penetrating oil, I've had good results using it even after Kroil didn't work.
No matter how many times you paint over a shadow, it's still there.

You'd have to buy a whole new cable, but would this work?

Thanks very much for that link.  Yes, that would be doable even though I have a new cable already installed.  I appreciate the replies.

I got mine from here a few years ago. At the time Silvers did not have access to the part. Prompt service, a reasonable price, and they didn't hit you with huge postage.

That is what I had to do. The fitting was impossible to get out even with a left hand bit. Ended up drilling it out, Helicoiling the thread and using the 4 into 1 cable.
