CB500 Pistons, Rings, & 1st, 2nd Bore?
« on: March 19, 2015, 08:07:49 AM »
Trying to figure out what to do for my CB500 — I see that Hondaman recommends going for the "1st overbore" on the small 4s. I see that rings are available in a series of "over sizes." I see .25mm, .50mm, and 1.0mm piston ring sets out there? Do you also need to buy the accompanying over size piston? Or can you just get the .25mm over size ring set (I assume that's the 'first' overbore?) and put em' on the original cylinders? Sorry for basic questions!

You need the corresponding piston as well I'm afraid.

Ok. Thanks for the clarification.

So the .25mm, .50mm, & 1.00mm standard options: would you (theoretically) work through those sequentially as your cylinders wear and you rebore? Or just jump straight to 1.00mm? These are different than like, the 600cc overbore "kits" correct?

Something like this seems more affordable than I thought! http://www.ebay.com/itm/HONDA-CB500K-CB500F-0-5mm-56-5mm-OVERSIZE-PISTON-SET-Four-Pistons-are-included-/141187273842?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item20df6ad472&vxp=mtr

I'd go straight to 1mm oversized, or to 59mm using a Wiseco kit.

Is that for the increased power?

Does going to a new bore require any changes to the carbs? I assume it'd change the airflow, back-pressure characteristics and all — though perhaps not enough to make a huge difference?

I concur.  A little more displacement is a little more better.  Improve the breathing of your engine (a glorified air pump) and it becomes a lot more better....
