Honda 550 four unusual indicator problem
« on: March 16, 2015, 01:58:23 PM »
Hi,

My 1979 Honda550 four has an unusual problem with the indicators. They were not working at all so I fitted a new flasher unit. Now they stop flashing when the engine revs up! They flash fine at tickover but as soon as rpm goes much above tickover, they stop flashing.
I find the electrics very difficult to understand - so any helpful advice will be gratefully received.

Does anything else odd happen when you rev - like does the headlight or other indicator lights dim/turn off?  Do they come back on when the engine comes down?

There is a  very slight increase in the brightness of the head lights as the revs go up. In case it was a flat battery I put it on a three hour charge and then rode the bike for twenty minutes. Still the same problem.

Could the replacement flasher unit be faulty - somehow faulting when the input current becomes too high?

What model of relay did you use? It's important to know if you have the correct part.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

Did you check all the grounds? I had a ground problem on mine that made all types of whacky issues happen with ONLY the blinkers. It was baffling for a little while. I have since added ground wires in certain areas.

Have they ever worked ? Like others have said what flasher did you use ? are they stock bulbs or LED's ?

Normally a ground issue don't forget to check the bulb holders its not unusual for a bulb to seize in with corrosion.

Are all the bulbs stock and correct?
