 have a chance to pick up an 81 cb900f in very good shape. anyone had experiance with these bikes? how are they? never messed with a dohc. thanx carl

I had an '82 900F for several years.  It was a great bike and gave me no problems.  I put about 20,000 miles on it if I remember right.  The main problem I heard about on the 81's was that they would pop out of gear.  Honda had a modification that year that fixed the problem.  Others have complained about cam chain tensioners, but I had no problem with mine.  The engine was a lot quieter running than my '75 750F.  Good power and smooth running.  My main criticism was that it had more motor than chassis.  The brakes are fairly good (I used Ferodo pads) and the suspension wasn't bad for the day, but the frame wasn't any more sophisticated than the SOHCs, but there is a lot more power there.  My experience with that bike has made me dis-inclined to hotrod my 750.

It has two cam chain tensioners. the rear one is under the carbs and slightly difficult to get to. If it isnt adjusted right it beats up the front guide then attacks the cylinder/cylinder head and wears a hole through them.
The front tensioner is fort he short chain between cams, tensioner top right of cyl head.
 It always gets atention as you can see it.
 Best to adjust when you have the cam cover off so you can see things moving.
I specialised in changing the cam chains in these things for about 3 yrs in the mid 1980's (just before Galea cam chain services started up in London)
