offence taken ?
« on: October 14, 2006, 03:53:12 AM »
after reading  some of the threads here, and the way some people jump on their high horse, thinking that someone is taking the michael.
my question is, are all americans (us) so ready to think that someone has done them wrong ?....... I use american because most people on this site appear to be from there. don't get me wrong, I don't mind a bit of lively banter but I feel some people take themselves too seriously.
any complaints will be gladly recieved and promptly filed in the nearest wastebin  ;D

Due to our large urban growth, many Americans live hundreds of miles from the nearest sheep ranch. I'm sure you can see how this could make one a tad "edgy", can't you? scunny? ;) :P :D :D :D :D

Perhaps if there were a set of clearly written rules (what can and cant be done on the message board) that would keep things in order.
Are there posted rules that I have not found?

agreed, well, on this forum anyway.  I think the point is about the manner in which that opinion is expressed.  For the most part, IMHO, as a percent of the total, there is probably not much difference in the amount of rude, inconsiderate hotheads in the US as anywhere else. They just show up more.

There are individuals from all over the world, communicating in 'real time', with many different ideas and opinions, which is what makes this site interesting to me. I'm impressed by the knowledge and experience pool that there is to draw from. Which is to be expected, of course, with so many members. I don't know any of you personally, but feel that you are 'friends' because of the fact that you share openly and honestly.

The fact that I cannot relate to, say, a member thinking nothing of shooting someone because they enter a home uninvited does not change my interest in visiting the forum on a daily basis. Everyone is entitled to their own beliefs and opinions and I am always interested in the different viewpoints I read about.

We may get hot under the collar at times, but you know what, the sun will still rise tomorrow! Hopefully anyway, because I want to see the MotoGP race on the box!

Ernie, yes I think it made sense.
I started this thread because I have seen how some threads suddenly become heated exchanges between people when I fail to see why.
Everyone is allowed an opinion, I/we don't have to agree with it

Everyone does have an opinion, the problem is that some refuse to listen to an opinion that is different from theirs OR if someone says they are wrong, the opinionated party gets all jacked up without checking to see if indeed they are wrong.

It comes down to the fact that people are too quick to get mad. Comes from a lack of oxygen from having ones head up their ass! ;D

Or the fact that football has degenerated into a bunch of overpaid sissies that hide behind rules and more padding than a nut house room!

Now would that be football football, or soccer football?

Here is the reason, Americans Think to much,
I'm a recovering thinker.

t started out innocently enough. I began to think at parties now and then -- to loosen up. Inevitably, though, one thought led to another, and soon I was more than just a social thinker. I began to think alone -- "to relax," I told myself -- but I knew it wasn't true.

Thinking became more and more important to me, and finally I was thinking all the time. That was when things began to sour at home. One evening I had turned off the TV and asked my wife about the meaning of life. She spent that night at her mother's.

I began to think on the job. I knew that thinking and employment don't mix, but I couldn't stop myself. I began to avoid friends at lunch time so I could read Thoreau and Kafka. I would return to the office dizzied and confused, asking, "What is it exactly we are doing here?"

One day the boss called me in. He said, "Listen, I like you, and it hurts me to say this, but your thinking has become a real problem. If you don't stop thinking on the job, you'll have to find another job."

This gave me a lot to think about.

I came home early after my conversation with the boss. "Honey," I confessed, "I've been thinking ..." "I know you've been thinking," she said, "and I want a divorce!"

"But Honey, surely it's not that serious."

"It is serious," she said, lower lip aquiver. "You think as much as college professors, and college professors don't make any money, so if you keep on thinking, we won't have any money!"

"That's a faulty syllogism," I said impatiently. She exploded in tears of rage and frustration, but I was in no mood to deal with the emotional drama.

"I'm going to the library," I snarled as I stomped out the door. I headed for the library, in the mood for some Nietzsche. I roared into the parking lot with NPR on the radio and ran up to the big glass doors... They didn't open. The library was closed. To this day, I believe that a Higher Power was looking out for me that night.

As I sank to the ground, clawing at the unfeeling glass, whimpering for Zarathustra, a poster caught my eye. "Friend, is heavy thinking ruining your life?" it asked. You probably recognize that line. It comes from the standard Thinker's Anonymous poster. Which is why I am what I am today: a recovering thinker. I never miss a TA meeting.

At each meeting we watch non-educational programming; typically Fox News or Scarborough Country. Then we share experiences about how we avoided thinking since the last meeting. I still have my job, and things are a lot better at home.

Life just seemed ... easier, somehow, as soon as I stopped thinking. I think the road to recovery is nearly complete for me. Today, I registered to vote Republican.
