I live in Illinois. But the bike is from another state. What kind of information Do you need?

Any way you can get the frame and engine number before you buy? Then run those numbers by the cops to be sure it is not stolen. Some states titled these bikes by the frame number and some by the engine number. However, if the seller just can't find the title have him file for a lost / replacement title.

This bike is a barn find and in immaculate condition. I am afraid that someone else is going to scoop it up before I do. Will there be issues if I buy the bike and file for a lost/replacement tile myself?

Yep, just did this.  I went through this outfit:  http://www.motorecyclenow.com/title-service.html  For bikes over 500cc, the VIN has to be run by law enforcement or DMV.

I'm in MD and went through VT to get a bike tagged without a title.  It was pretty simple and just followed the steps on the ADVRider link.

I'm in PA. which is a Tough  'title only' state and no problem w/ a VT. registration and then applying for PA. reg. and title,got my PA. reg. and title right away on my CB350.

+1...WI is terrible to get a title. Went the VT route and got my registration in 3 weeks. Now in about 6 months I will take it to the WI DMV and get my title. Completely legit too. Just not having to deal with the WI red tape.

The Vermont "way" to get one is pretty easy too with no added fees for someone else to do the work.

Does this work on salvage titled bikes as a way to get an unbranded do over for a bike restored from ground up?    I don't think a salvage titled be can be unbranded to anything better than "rebuilt". Wondering if when VT runs vin and sees "salvage" they automatically issue you a salvage title?  Anyone have any idea?

You won't get a title from Vermont, only a registration.  Makes me wonder if there's anything on my registration that accounts for that.  I'll have a look later at it...

edit:  Here's what mine looks like.  There is a "title" block.  Maybe a brand would go there?

And judging from this, I probably could have found the forms myself.  It cost the OP about $90 but that was about 4 years ago so I think the $150 I spent was well worth it.  I get a discount on the next one I do too..

thanks for going to the trouble to look fmctm and others. I suspect that the only way I'm going to find out if it works is to throw the dice on the VT fees and see what happens.

I think 400cc? and below is cheaper..smaller bikes less$.

Older bikes go for less,that helps
