140/90-16 rear tire
« on: May 23, 2016, 02:09:35 PM »
I have a 16" spoked rear wheel from my parts bike that I'm going to install on my 74 Cb750. The wheel has a 130/90-16 tire on it right now that needs to be replaced and I am considering going to a 140. I have read that some say there is plenty of room and no mods are necessary for it to fit, others say the brake rod needs to be reshaped to clear and some say you need offset sprockets. So the question is who here is running a 140, what exactly did you have to do to make it fit and if you can please post some pics. Also, what brand tire are you running and how happy have you been with it? Thanks for the help.

I run a 140 90 16 on my cb750 k3 engine in a k6 frame, but i also run a cb650 swing arm so i dont know how much extra room that gave me but im sure it helped. I run a kenda kruz 2nd one ive had on it and they hold up really well, the last one was a 130 and lasted 3 years and still had plenty of life left till one drunken night in the garage and some dares it went up in smoke. The chain clears fine and the brake linkage is fine but with the stock swing arm i think the brake stay arm and the swing arm itself may pose some issues, also i use a 650 chain guard that clears fine but the stock 750 chain gurd may need some trimming.

So good news it fits! Need to move the brake stay rod to the outside and space out where it attaches to the wheel with a longer bolt but other than that no problems. Looks so much better than the skinny stocker. What do you guys think?

Well... you asked...
I think the fat tire looks ridiculous and handling will suffer - the unsprung weight is most likely higher (depends on if you have a tubeless wheel, but most swaps use a spoke tube-type rim laced to the stock hub) and the steering geometry will be altered (not improved). Having a "fat weenie" on a 125HP+ bike designed for it makes sense. On an old CB with ~60hp at the wheel... it doesn't.

I think it would look much better if the mudguard wasn't missing!

To each his own I guess. I couldn't stand that pizza cutter back there. As for handling, I'm not running the Isle of Man TT or anything so I'm not worried about performance at 10/10ths. Running the tires through a height calculator the 140 is slightly taller so wouldn't that reduce rake and trail leading to a slight increase in maneuverability? Honestly between work and family obligations its easier to spend time (and sometimes get more enjoyment from) wrenching on it than riding. As for the back end, next project is a cafe seat. I'm not a huge fan of the brat look but its better than the stock rear fender IMO. As for weight, I should have compared before I mounted it but just using the old arm scales it doesn't feel like much of a difference. I get unsprung and rotational effects but I don't think it will be a big deal for what I do with it.

Took it around the block last night for a few laps and so far so good. No rubbing. I'm taking it easy till I get the tire broken in but I'll keep you posted on the handling affects.

The old tire does look a little narrow, it it a 4.00x18?

Interested in buying your seat if it is not damaged [once you replace it]

The original is a 110/90-18 which I think is the stock size. As for the seat I'll probably hang on to it for now but if I change my mind Ill let you know.

BTW I like your choice of color on your bike :)

110 is small for a 750 IMO, I run 120's.

Like your tank color too!   But I've somehow ended up with 3 blue bikes in the garage.  Thinking about changing the K4 to Sunrise Orange....

That's funny, I have 3 blue ones too! My trail 70, my sons PW50 and my CB. Im not even that big a fan of blue normally, just kind of happened. Sunset orange is a really nice color, I'm sure it would look great. One of these days I want to repaint mine with big fat metal flake. I did mine a few years ago and it looks nice and really pops in the sun, but I want bigger flake now.

I love Blue, had the K4 painted, bought an aftermarket Z1 bodyset "Super Blue" and bought a CB550F with original Sapphire Blue paint.  Although they are all blue, each is a different shade. I would paint over the blue as it is mint, I'll just save it for later.
