suzuki t500 titan

im going to look at a t500 thursday,does anyone know anything about these bikes and can tell me what i need to look at in particular?thanks

Pre 1974 T500's only held 1200cc of transmission oil and some examples have been known to have tranny problems if rode hard. The later models were redesigned to hold 1400cc's. What year is the one your considering ?   I have a soft spot for that model as that was the first bike my Father owned when I was a kid and remember riding on it with him, and wiping out with him once also. Momma was not happy when Dad came limping in the door with me.   ;)

T500 built from 1968-1975 then changed to GT500 from 1975-1977. 'Back in the day' they were a big twin for a two stroke and people thought they would overheat and blow up but they fared very well and were a success for Suzuki.

Went and saw the bike today,im still not sure what year it is.seller wants 1500 usd for it,ill be honest,if it was a 750 honda,i wouldnt give 1500 for it.no pics because the building was dark.the bike is in petersburg va if anyone is interested

It was a robust engine duster. The bike was no light weight though. I read a lot about development of this engine for racing. Guys in Australia were coaxing 80HP out of them for vintage racing.

I found a T500 for sale, may go look at it tomorrow.  It's basically a basket case, most everything is there except the tank which was too far gone to save [per the seller]

Think I can find parts easy enough?  Seems to be a good selection on eBay but some are pricey.

Hey Eric...yes, I'm familiar with Miller, I bought a [pricey] service manual from him for my X6 Hustler.  Good to know that is an option.

Unless it's a mint runner, I wouldn't pay $1500 either.  They're fun in a straight line, but rough in the corners as the swingarm is spindly and flexes pretty badly if pushed hard.  The GT500 is nice because it's front disc.

The bike I am considering is only $300 [Dusterdude looked at one for $1500 and passed on it].  I dont you can find a "mint runner" for $1500, these smokers are becoming highly collectable.

I hope the bike I'm interested in has the drum front brake, it is so much cooler looking!

In the early 70’s I went coast to coast on I 10 with a friend on a Titan, I was on my K0 750. The TitAn was great, all day long, through the desert, no problems. Cool bike.

Got this sweet machine for $150......with title!

After removing handsfull of rust from the right cyl, it took a month soaking and twisting on a puller to break it free. Going to try and re-use the pistons with new rings and a hone job.

The PO was in the process of a re-furb?????

Note the rear sprocket on the wrong side!!!!

Cheapest bikes are the most expensive bikes!

I have yet to go look at the T500 in Austin but that's what I'm expected to see, but without a tank.   

I'm hesitant to buy another major project bike as I have six projects already.

We used to race a Titan based sidecar back in the early eighties. (When I had hair)
Won an Aus Dirt Track Title in 1982 I think?
The motor had some very rare TR components.
Can you pick the motors used in the other sidecars?
It's quite a distinguished collection for vintage mc buffs. :)
