Can't Kill Sprocket/Shifter Seal Oil Leak!
« on: March 31, 2015, 07:38:12 PM »
I had the sprocket seal replaced on my 1979 CB650 with an original split seal and it still leaks. I also replaced the shifter seal multiple times and it still leaks. I've also slathered both seals heavily with RTV and it still leaks.

It's hard to tell just how much is coming out but after a ride there is always a small drip spot on the ground, so I don't really know how much I'm losing while riding, but it concerns me.

Any ideas to kill the leak dead?

Crankcase vent tube clear? If not you could have extra pressure build up forcing oil out in those places.

That's a good idea, I'll check that out and see. That does make sense, but not sure if that's true in my case.

Are the shafts perfect? MY buddy had a shifter seal leak on his KTM and it was all do to a tiny mark on the shaft probably from a previous attempt at changing the seal. It was as if a scribe made a tiny line in the direction of removal. It leaked like CRAZY. We wound up trying to polish it out but that never worked. As it turned out we were able to reverse the seal. It moved the lip past that little area thus sealing everything well.
