Is this exhaust dent ok?
« on: April 05, 2015, 07:46:53 PM »
I bought this 4 into 1 header and it has a dent in one of the pipes. Im posting a pic of the dent. Do you think this will effect the running of the bike? Should I leave it alone or get the dent out?

Not ideal but it will run OK. The bike that got me back into 750's was like that.

It obviously will have an effect but you wouldn't notice.
You could drill a hole in that, put in a coarse thread screw, pull out the dent, remove screw and fill hole with weld.  ...maybe.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

I rembember back in the day...getting a brand new spankin set of headers for the Chevelle(or Nova, Malibu, Duster, pickup truck whatever..)and expecting 'em to bolt on...nope...hammer modifications were pretty much always required and your brand new pipes ended up looking just like that.  They still worked fine.
If it works good, it looks good...

Its probably ok but not ideal.  It can probably be removed and two methods come to mind.

1. fill dented section with water and freeze and thaw it a bunch of times. the expansion due to freezing is supposed to slowly work the dent out. the downside is it may swell or split the tube aswell. I have tried this on 2 stroke expansion chambers and it works but requires time and patience

***if your gonna do this wash the pipe many times to eliminate any flammable materials and add a valve to quickly release press***
2. make fittings and pressurize the tube or entire header to 10-40 psi then apply heat. the pressure will cause it to pop out. the downside to this could be deforming it outward or causing an explosion from the crap in the pipe. I have tried this on another 2 stroke expansion chamber and got good results quickly, was just a smokey stinky process

Looks exactly like my exhaust.  Never had any complaints and it runs like a mad rabbit.
Some good ideas on how to repair

Is there a removable muffler at the collector? Can the dent be reach by pushing a tool into the pipe? If so, heating and knocking the dent out should be easy. The ice method described previously will not work at all unless the pipe is sealed. The water will freeze and expand in the path of least resistance, so it will expand in both directions in the pipe but not put pressure enough to remove the dent.
