Ton Run... now working.
« on: October 15, 2006, 04:46:00 PM »
Guys,

Earlier today, I went for a ride and took along a digital recorder.  Here is a sample of what my bike sounds like doing a Ton.  The wind noise is a bit annoying once I reach and hold a Ton, but you can get a sense for how loud my exhaust is as it winds up. During the sound clip you will here:
1.   My bike at idle.
2.   Two 0 to 60 runs in just a few seconds (a tick over 3 seconds).
3.   My bike hit a Ton just through three gears.
4.   My 836CC revving to 8K.
5.    A 70 to 100 top gear roll on.

Man, I get all excited to hear the roar of a 750 in full growl, and then, nothing... !!!   :-\   ;D

I had opportunity to try the ton quickly yesterday.  I didn't downshift like I should have if I really wanted to get the revs up- I just kept accelerating from a 75mph cruising speed, in 5th the whole time.  I got up to 90, and then saw the traffic start to queue up in front of me, so I rolled off the throttle.  Plenty of revs left, I have no doubt I would have hit 100 or better "indicated" mph.  I gotta admit, it felt a little scary on the 550 going that fast..  Maybe if I had a better road to try it on, with no chance of traffic or red lights.  Perhaps some other time..

That's awesome - I hit 85 my 550 but didn't feel real confident - it seems to bog a little around 7k rpms. What kinda rpms are you hitting at 90?

I think (going from memory of the RPM needle position, then just looking at the gauge now) it was around 7500 RPM..  I know for sure I still had at least 1000 'til readline starts..

I've done 90 indicated on my F2.  Wind was pretty impressive, but solid enough.  Could have kept going well over 100, but didn't really want a ticket.

When I hit an indicated 85 MPH or so on my 350f, the only limiter I hit (felt like there was still a ways to go) was the fear that the wheels were going to spin off of their own accord, or something was going to get in my way necessitating "evasive manuvers".  I seem to do 10MPH per 1000 RPM in top gear.  With a 10.5K redline, I should be able to do 105 MPH, right?  Maybe with a tailwind, going downhill, with my chin on the tank...I figured a 550 would be more capable, and a 750 much more so.  Am I wrong?

And may I add that one (or at least, I) should not post after a night at the pub followed by several PBRs at home?  Of course a 750 is capable of a ton.  I'd like to know  how comfortably the various SOHCs reach their top speed (and what it may be)  in this day and age, and how it breaks down by engine capacity.

I was able to link the wav. file to my homepage.  It now works, at least for me.

"With a 10.5K redline, I should be able to do 105 MPH, right?"
Top gear is really a cruising gear and generally the engineers design it so the engine RPM is near the torque peak at 60MPH. There's no guarante that you can get to redline in top gear, with a 350F 110 MPH very unlikely except - as you guessed - downhill with a tailwind.
Changing the sprocket ratio a bit would let you hit redline in top gear at around 95 MPH or so and you'd have peppier acceleration in lower gears. You would be screaming along at 7000 RPM at 60 MPH though, pretty annoying IMO.

Guys,

I should have put forth this disclaimer earlier.  I have access to a test track facility and this is where I did my Ton run.  Very safe and controlled conditions, other than a wicked cross wind.  No risk of a ticket or injuring anyone other than myself.  I am not advocating going fast on your bike. ;)

Sparty-pants,

At lower rpm's it seemed as if the bike was missing on two of the cylinders.  right? wrong?

Of course it sounded bad-ass once you hit higher rpm's though!

Are you running baffles?

I did the Ton Run today out on an empty back road.  Accelerated hard through first three gears and I was doing 100mph at redline in fourth.  Backed off immediately after that.

liaudio,

You are correct sir... I do have some issues with my bike missing at lower rpms.  My current carb set up SUCKS!!  The air/fuel mixture is really messed up at lower rpms and the engine is hungry for fuel.  I am running a stock air box with a paper air filter, which doesn't help either.  Once I put on my CR carbs, things should be better.  I have a new Dyna ignition and coils, so i know that they are working fine - but my carbs are holding my bike back.

I have no baffles in the pipe.

I am also running stock gearing.
