CB550 WONT START NEED HELP!!
« on: April 07, 2015, 08:27:55 PM »
First off i wanted to say this is my first post! I've been following is forum for some time and have gathered a ton of useful info so im hoping to get some more detailed info on my current situation. Here is a little backround on the bike. The frame is a 72 cb500 and the motor is a 78 cb550, i assembled the bike last year and needed to take it to my local honda dealership to get the carbs rebuilt and synced. 700 bones later she ran great, but by the time i put her away for the winter the head gasket and cam cover leaks were bothering me so i decided to tear her down and replace those gaskets over winter. upon doing so i repainted the motor, replaced the gaskets, set the cam to proper position, and did a valve adjustment. Just the other week i put her all back together and when i went to fire her up it just cranked away untill the battery was dead. i readjusted the valves to ensure that was correct (inlet cylinder 1&4 were tight and i noticed they did not push the valves down as far as two and three.I noticed gas dripping out of the stock air box, so i pulled plugs and found they were bone dry without even the slightest wiff of gas. Next i pulled the air filter out and tried starting her again then i noticed gas misting threw the air box. All my intake seals are new and all rubber boots are not damaged and tightly sealed. Im not sure what would cause the carbs to push gas threw the air box and not suck air threw as it should. With the nice weather on the way i wanna get this up and running to get the maximum riding time in this year!! I am all ears i can use all the helpful advice i can get!! THANK YOU - scottie

Clean the carbs.  Only real advice to give here.

It's not unusual for the carbs to junk up when left to sit for a long while.

As for gas pooling into the air box, it's not unusual for this to happen when a gas inlet valve is sticking or something.
