78 750K Difficult second start
« on: April 14, 2015, 03:45:21 AM »
78 750k with 6400 miles, starts great the first time kick or button and rides great after a typical warm up period.   After a short ride to the gas station or long ride to really warm it up, it's difficult to start again.  Give it 60 minutes or more of rest and it starts like normal.   I've tried a few different things including shutting the fuel off 20 seconds prior to turning the key off to prevent fuel buildup in the carbs,  I've let it idle for a minute before turning the key off, and tried restarting immediately after turning it off.  Same problem no matter what.  Can't tell if it's too much gas or too little but it's definitely fuel related.    Any guesses?

Have your plug wrench ready as soon as it does it do not give it any fuel pull plug 1 or 4 see what it looks and smells like. Do you know what condition your carbs are in? Does the pump on #2 work? We are just trying to see if it is a fuel issue and go from there. Your carbs are real simple to do a clear tube fuel level test. Do you know how to do this? Have you pulled the press in slow jets out to clean them?

I have not had any engine work done to it and to my knowledge, neither did the previous owner.  I pulled the plugs once when it was happening and found them dry and odor free, but had a sting smell of gas out the tailpipe at the same time.    The carbs probably need a good cleaning again and I'll focus on the slow jets. I have not done a clear tube test yet.  I figured I would gain as much of a head start on what to be looking for before I dove in too deep in pulling carbs off. And yanking things apart.      I purchased the bike last spring and went through it all after it spent many years sitting dormant.  Like I said, 6400 miles on it since 78.  Pulled the tank and carbs, cleaned things out but they weren't as dirty as you might expect. Oil change, new clutch and brakes and away we go.  Something probably got stirred up or broke free and has now gummed it up.    I'll find some time and play with it a little more.  Thanks for the advice.
