Proper way to measure '77 CB550 float height
« on: April 13, 2015, 05:09:27 PM »
Simple question, when measuring for correct float height when the float doesn't sit level, do you measure from the highest point or just the center of the float regardless if it's level or not?

Thanks,

It's my understanding that it's from the highest point.  I haven't actually measured them in a while though.  I believe it's the highest point though.

I use a float height measuring tool, makes it simpler to gauge it.

Highest point.  Remember to take the measurement without any of the weight of the float depressing the spring.

If you have some finesse, it should be relatively easy to hold the carb so that you can tell when it touches the spring, but is not depressing it yet.  This is going to be at around a neutral, horizontal position with a slight turn up to tell you when the touch.

Thanks guys. I put brand new OEM float needles in so I'll make sure not to compress the springs as I measure. Just eyeing them up I see that they are not set at the same heights. I want to make sure I do this right the first time.
