What did you do to your SHOP today?
« on: April 14, 2015, 08:03:07 PM »
On the suggestion of the esteemed Steve-o, I am spawning this thread for those of you that are building and tinkering with your workspace.

I'm putting a shop together now, am a few weeks hard into it, although a lot has led up to it. So I'll start with a little catch up and update as I go.

Raw space.

Perfectly good, a little rough around the edges.

So I pressure washed the floor and the roll-up door and cleaned out the loft, then etched it for paint.

Painted it.

Ahhhh

Scrounged some additional 8' lights from a neighbor here, pressure washed THOSE, got the building electrician to work with me and install them:

Started moving stuff in, roughing it into position:

Late last week and this, some heavy stuff started to arrive...

Ran up to Phoenix last week with my friend James (aka Harisuluv), and visited the mythical Trailer of Carbs. Here's the man, literally standing on a foot of cylinders and cylinder heads at this instant:

...and then picked up a big commercial kitchen sink, just visible at the right:

And tomorrow we are going to be piping some air and related, and today I did order a dry blast cabinet. And so that's where we're at.

My shop is my garage. I did this last weekend. Since the garage out back opened up (I have a second, single car garage. My GF and I split up and now it's empty, other than parts), I moved my '63 Bug out there and rearranged  the bikes in the attached garage.
This pic only shows about a third of the space. I have room for my tools, work bench, lawn mower, car...and space for about 3 or 4 more bikes.

I wrenched on the XS650 (not pictured), drank beer and watched MotoGP and listened to Pandora. This is quickly becoming my favorite spot.

That looks excellent. What I long for is a friggin window and maybe something green - this is in an industrial area, which is awesome because anything you need is 10 minutes away, and nobody cares if you're whanging on something with a hammer for an hour, but my last 3 shops were at my home and that is a lot better in many ways.

Chem stripped and epoxy painted a salvaged band saw. Then it gets moved back into the shop to be reassembled and renovated. After which, I'll airbrush its moniker: "Divorce Court" on the hook. Ought to keep the wife away from the shop telling me about how dinner's getting cold  >:(

That old bandsaw kicks ass. Can't wait to see it finished.

Wait a minute, Cal.  It depends on what just may be that neighbor's fridge.
Not exactly sure what Nils may like to drink, but with a name like Noblehops, I personally wouldn't be buying him a Lone Star Beer if he happened to be in a local bar 'round here!

What did I do to my shop today?...messed it up, of course.  Messes are fun to me, clean shops are for production and money making.  My shop does not do that so well.  I will get you guys some pics some day when it is somewhat cleaner. :)

My theory, soon to be tested, is that it's all a matter of space. If you have space to spread out a project and store it without always having to break it down because you need to repurpose the space, then it will be easier (possible?) to keep it tidy.

All of my prior shops were no more than 20% this size, and in a semi-constant state of chaos. We will see how this one fares :-).

It should work, but be careful.  Don't be like me.  Be sure 5 times the space equals 5 times the work areas, NOT room for 5 times more bikes.

Yeah, but he has a day job.

I'm beginning to think you are a "kept man"! That would make you my hero!

I can just only imagine: The wife leaves prompty at 7am to her high level seven figure executive position at Dell, I'm left home to tend to my bikes and plan a tasty BBQ dinner!

Put an application in for her over at Texas Instruments Steve  !!  Know of a couple ex Michigan folks over there. They came down during the "Great Rust Belt Migration" quite a few years ago when it was dangerous to leave your Michigan plate on your car.   ;)

If you were to go back to the old "Let's see pictures of your shop" thread, there are some in there.  Unfortunately, I am a lot better at fixing bikes than these damn 'puters...so I have no way to upload current photos for now.
