Who makes the most awesome blast cabinet?
« on: April 13, 2015, 08:13:24 AM »
As in the title, I need a dry blast cabinet, want to buy it once. Priorities are for good ergonomics, excellent seal, and excellent dust collection. Will have abundant clean dry air for it.

What do you like and conversely what do you dislike? Quality more important than cost in this case. TIA for your thoughts.

My pops runs a VW/European auto repair shop...they have been using the same Snap On cabinet for probably fifteen or twenty years.  I use it and it still works great.  I know their stuff is expensive, but it does get a serious lifetime guarantee.

No problem. I have also heard that Harbor Freight makes one too, but I don't have any firsthand experience with one.

Hey Nils....

I'm sure Greggo is right, you cannot go wrong with Snap-On, but you will pay. Would be perfect if you could find a used one.

Eastwood sells em, this small one is on sale...

Harbor Freight one works, but so poorly that I usually find it less frustrating to just strip/sand/clean stuff by hand.
If it works good, it looks good...

My friend just made one out of an oil tank. Works amazingly well.

My company has an EMPIRE ABRASIVES unit, professional grade (runs on 3 phase 440V), we've had it for about 30+ years and the dust collector portion is still performing flawlessly, and the rest of the machine is in excellent operational condition.  We do the regular replacement of the gloves, the nozzle and the glass and that's about it.
On a lot of the TV shows like Horsepower and the like you see a lot of the "BLAST-IT-ALL" brand, no personal experience there but they seem to be popular.

+1.   The Harbor Freight one works great if you don't need to see what you are doing, don't mind that it leaks like a sieve, and silicosis holds no terrors for you. ;)

Ya, I think I know that one big variable is that the air has to be dry. We just did buy a nice IR dryer, and have some plumbing to do to connect it all. I am indeed concerned about the seal, and silicosis, and the ergonomics of it for efficient production, hence the question.

I appreciate the thoughts so far, keep em coming please.

Trinco is probably the widest used commercial unit. About $1k. Look at Production Tool Supply.

+1.   I bought one years ago from Machine Mart in the UK, similar to Harbor Freight's offering. It gets the job done but it's like peering into a cloud, have to stop every 30 seconds or so to see what's happening. And I can only use it outdoors to avoid contaminating everything in the shop. I'd recommend buy the best or build yourself.

Thanks a ton for the thoughts men.

I've also had mixed results with the Harbor Freight and their ilk, and with what I'm up to this is really infrastructure, so I can't mess around.

I took kavellunga's suggestion and investigated Trinco, they are pretty industrial, have a ton of parts and distributors available, many options. I went with a 40x40 with a dust evac and the option to open like a clamshell, pretty useful for putting large or heavy parts in it.

MANY THANKS for the input.

I've seen a couple of blast cabinets made from old fridges and freezers, saw a good one made from an electrical cabinet {junction box/ fuse box} from a large building demolition as well.... ;)
