Wiring schematic Headlight?
« on: April 13, 2015, 07:12:09 pm »
What is indicated as headlight switch on the top of this schematic (next to kill switch) and on the bottom hi/lo (next to clutch operated switch). What is the difference? Which turns the headlight on?

Oh and where does the front stop switch hook up on the bike next to the brake lever or by the disc? I forgot where this went when disassembling the bike. A picture would be great.

Thanks

The headlight is on automatically and constantly. There's a separate fuse for it on your bike.

The front brake switch is behind the steering stem at the junction of the upper and lower brake line. You should see a green/yellow wire and a black wired to it.

Yes as soon as the you turn the key the headlight turns on. My question is why on the schematic you see two place indicated as headlight switch, shouldn't the signal run through the hi/lo? Do you understand my question?

Behind the steering stem isn't that the same place where the ignition coils lay?

Oh I see, does the stop switch look like a tiny speaker? I thought that was the turn signal buzzer

No the only thing that might look like a speaker. is the horn next the the alternator big blue round circle. The turn buzzer and front stop sw. are at the bottom left with the clutch sw. just above where it says CB550 in bold type

Alek - I got your question now...

The wiring at the top of the page is the power source for the headlight, it runs through the right side control. The control for the dimmer (hi/lo) is on the left side switch, and shown at the bottom. Make sense?

The tiny speaker you describe is the turn signal buzzer. If your bike has the stock front brake switch, it's round, has two male bullet ends, and should be around the bottom triple tree, slightly behind it and the steering stem.

The coils hang horizontally in the open space of the backbone below the tank. I don't use a stock switch else I'd snap a picture for you.

However, here's a fantastic thread for you to read and refer to for premium quality guidance and pictures of a stock 550

Your 550 is wired so the headlight always comes on with the key turned  'on'. The headlight switch you are seeing beside the kill switch and the start switch is part of the start button. In other words the start switch and the headlight 'off' switch are actually together behind the start button ( just shown separate in the dia. for clarity )...... when you press the start button, the starter solenoid wires connect and the headlight switch contacts disconnect. The purpose is to turn off the headlight while the starter is engaged ( allowing all battery power to go to the starter ). When you let go of the start button, the headlight reconnects and the start wires disconnect.... :)

Ok I see. As Calj probably knows by now, my wiring harness is going to have a three way switch for lo/kill/hi and will be a kick only. So this doesn't really apply. I am being careful not to miss anything and preventing confusion when I hook everything up and it doesn't work. Thanks

I going to have to look at my brake line tomorrow and If I can't find the switch I'll let you know.
