Bonacci01 350f Start of Build and a GREAT STORY!!
« on: June 14, 2009, 07:37:00 PM »
A little backstory first.  I got my first motorcycle last summer, a 78 550k.  I bought it for $300 out of a barn.  I threw a set of clubmans on, whipped up a seat, and slammed together an exhaust and did a tune up in 3 weeks and have been riding it since.   Its kind of a "rat racer"  But I fondly named her lucky.  She needs a few things here and there, but mostly runs like a bear and turns a lot of heads.  Now onto the story.

I heard rumors a few months back about an old man about 15 miles from where I live out in the country that had barns full old asian bikes.  I heard this from a family friend.  Well, about 3 or 4 weeks ago I decided to take a trip out to try and find this place.  We went out and eventually found it after getting a little lost and what we found left us both stunned.  About 4 barns full of asian bikes from the 70's mostly.  As the story goes the old man is 93 now, and in a nursing home.  He has left this part of the estate to the guy I dealt with.  Well, I came home with this 350 four and also a circa 65-66 sears allstate 175 and a few tanks. The price?  Well he told me , $50 a bike , except for the rare stuff.  Now this place was packed with 750s, 550s, tons of 500t's, kaw triples, a few rd's and tons more.  He estimated 5-600.  The problem with most of them is that they are partial bikes with no paperwork, great for parts, but hard to resurrect one out of.  Well thats enough chat for now, onto a few pics.

My 550

MY Friend Nick on it. I think he likey!

The new Projects

Mock up with tank and the 550 seat.

I have background in autobody, but am still new to this bike stuff, so the build will be slow and methodical on the 350f.  Here is a pic of my friend Nick and my cars .(who went to the yard with me that day) and is pictured on the 550 rolling shot above (who also has a 550 on the board here)

Ford Focus hatchbacks.
Shaved, Ford oem european bumpers, hid headlights, all the rare stuff.

Let me know what you guys think!

Man, I dream about finding a bike junkyard like that!  Where do you live?  I'd probably end up divorced if that place was near me.

I like where you are headed with this build.

Haha, yeah I'm lucky that I'm a mid 20s single guy. I am in central ohio.  I am trying to unload a 67 barracuda coupe project I bought and never started to finance going back to buy a handful more bikes for parts.  I'd have to get a storage unit because as you can tell my shop is quite small here.

That seat pairs up nicely with that tank....  what seat is that from, or is it a custom ?
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

I made it from the back portion of the stock 550 tank that was too rusted and messed up inside to use.  I just sat it there on the 350, it doesnt fit it , so I am just thinking of making a duplicate from fiberglass and working from that for the 350 seat, I just like the shape of it that much.

Today I was working on the rear wheel.  I was going to strip the drum, but I couldnt seem to get the drum lever off the drum, where the shaft is splined.  It wiggles, I just didnt want to pry to hard on it and gouge the drum face.  So i moved on to cutting off the rear tire.  I was planning on running new spokes ($70 for 2 sets on ebay) with color matched rims.  I was able to strip away the small amount of surface rust on the outside with a stripping wheel on my drill to my satisfaction, but when I got the tire off the inside is a little more ugly.  I dont know what constitutes getting new rims ?!

Any suggestions ?  Where is an affordable place to look?  Any I am lost as to relacing.....I need to find some info on that.

Nice find!!!

You defiantly want to replace the spokes.  Buchanan is where I got mine from, but I am sure someone can chime in with a more affordable option.

As for the rim, you may want to clean it before replacing it.  Take OOO fine steel wool and saturate it with WD40, then lightly sand the rust away.  I have removed rust from exhausts, and exposed perfect chrome under the rust.  Pay particular attention to the holes that the spokes lace through.  If they are wearing away, pitch the rim.

Is that a '78?

If so, what condition is that luggage rack in and are you planning on keeping it?

I know the '78s require a different size rack than any of the other models (or so I've been told) which has made them difficult to find.

Yes, I imagine they would be. I've found brand-new ones that cost way more than I would pay even if I could afford it. Anyone know what the difference is? Are the '78s wider or something?

The project looks like fun, though. A lot of work, but fun.

Yeah it was a 78, and Well the luggage rack was in better condition than it is now, I chucked all the extra parts!  :'(  Sorry .  Just getting into this I didnt realize that there may be a use for just about anything.

I got the rim off the hub, the spoke holes look fine, its on the sides where its a little worse, but it seems to clean up ok with a little scraping and wire wheeling. Im going to try steel wool next.  I played around polishing the hub too, man is it hard!  All those years of oxidation didnt come out with 220 grit on the da, then 400 then I polished on the wheel....what is the heaviest grit you guys use on really crusty stuff?

Well if it were not for the pics, I'd say that story has "biker urban legend" written all over it.

Congrats on the great find.

Bumping this up, because Sinister902 came to visit again, and we decided to go see if this place still existed......to our horrible dismay.....it was still there, but EMPTY. NOTHING LEFT. 250+ bikes vanished. Makes us both feel sick and wish that we had figured out a way to purchase more of what was there almost 2 years ago when we found it. RIP "Jack's Cycle"

we tried looking up the place on google to see if there was any sort of talk about it or history of the place, but there is nothing on it. I might have to start asking around town and see if I can get any old stories out of some of the old-timer biker guys. I bet they have great stories to tell.

on the 350f project, I sold it off a while back...so this is no longer a build thread.....only a great story about some fabled place we found once and when we went back it was gone.
