Can the delete this post option be gotten rid of?
« on: October 16, 2006, 04:04:13 PM »

Can the option to delete ones own post be gotten rid of?  It really messes up the continuity of the thread when a person deletes part of the thread right in the middle of it. When reading the replies to the post that was deleted, it really goofs up the thread and is hard to follow and often times make no sense, rhyme or reason.
For example, a thread could start out as “tire inflation” and the way some threads can  go off in any particular direction, it could jump abruptly to “you know, that day of the year that you can stand an egg on its end” after the thread has been chopped up randomly.
Can this be taken off as an option?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but one can only delete one's own posts unless you are a moderator. In which case the moderator probably felt justified in deleting something. Is this correct?

Each member has the option of deleting their own posts, but nobody elses.  It doesn't bother me if someone wants to remove a post they made after having some time to think about it.

agreed... IMO, one should always have the right to remove their own posts.  dg: put it this way, if you felt like a dumbass for posting something wouldn't you like to be able to remove it?  or, maybe, you were getting a divorce and talked all sorts of smack... then, somehow you get back together... what if she saw it??   :-[  I sure vote to keept the option  :)

He, or anybody, should not be able to. If this is the case, there is a problem that needs to be reported.

El Cheapo didn't delete Dg's posts.  El Cheapo deleted El Cheapo's posts.  That shouldn't be a problem, should it?

Thats why I think before I post and post 1 time. Some people post things as a fact and then go delete any trace that there ever was any mention of it. Whether it be deleted or edited out, the claims change all the time.
IMHO the mods should be the only ones who can delete any post by anybody. Members should not have the option to delete their own post just to change what they once claimed.

As far as I know, no one has deleted any of my post, not even myself.

Untill today.

Daniel

It might screw up some of the threads, but I'm of the opinion that you are in charge of your presence on this site.  If you want to delete some of your posts or your account and all of your posts, that is your business.  I'd much prefer that you took care of it yourself instead of asking me or any of the moderators to do it for you.

You should see I think it was my first couple of post. I was about me putting my name under the thread or something like that. I think it got lots of attention. LOL

Hey DG, could you not just quote (cut and paste it into your thread) anything from the original thread that you think may later be deleted?

I realize that's a pain but if you read something that you know someone is going to delete if questioned then it would still be there for reference wouldn't it?

I assure you I am not trying to stoke any fires here...just providing some input...

That's a great idea - it also helps frame your own posts in the proper context if they are in response to another post.  I often find myself missing the context of posts deep in a thread even if the original post is still there.  And there are people who are using one of the links at the top and just reading new posts, so they might never see the start of the thread unless they take the time to go back through it.

KGhost- that avatar ROCKS!

Yes, I've been guilty of deleting some of my posts myself..  This mostly happened when I was at the height of my "I must reply to flame bait political threads" days.  I'd start to take things personally, and post some ridiculous hateful #$%*.  THANK GOODNESS I can remove my posts if necessary!!!  I'd be historically captured in this forum as the town a-hole.

I think DG had a good point- he thinks before he posts, and therefore has no need to delete stuff- unfortunately, I have not matured to the think-before-you-speak level!  :)

So, no offense to DG, but the remove your own post thing has saved my butt on a few occasions..

I think that the delete post option just muddles up the whole thread. With the edit option, it can be pretty much deleted, but it shows that it is still there and has been edited for content.

 Usually when I edit or add to a post, I leave the original message intact and put;

Edit: this is what I forgot and this is what I meant, (etc)

at the bottom of my original post.

That way the post still has the original message and the correction by me and the whole thread is still intact.
