Thoughts on my new CB750L and a genuine question
« on: April 16, 2015, 06:03:17 PM »
All in all I'm very pleased with my new CB750.  It is a genuine CB750K limited edition.  Engine has compression - I know this from manually turning the engine over.  The body is straight.

Things I'm pleased with:
The gas tank, even though I don't have a key for it, is 100% clean.  No rust, dirt, debris, the metal inside is about as new as you can get.  The tank is a bit scratched and chipped, but I can't expect anything more from a 35 year old tank.
The engine is all there, no leaks, dents or cracks.
I found the actual owner's manual in the underseat storage bin.
I found a picture of the previous owner under the seat - well okay I don't know if it's him, that's just my guess.

Things I'm a bit annoyed with:
The previous owner salvaged a bit from it.  No tach, signals - had to buy used from the junkyard.
The owner saw fit to mount a fairing on a bike that Honda only made 5000 of >:(  As a result the wiring is butchered, there's no headlight, and I had to junk this rusty fairing mount and probably got 10 cases of tetanus.
The owner left it outside for YEARS.  It's rusty, barnacled frame, engine has serious finish dandruff, cables and rubber pieces are trash
The bank 1 and 2 exhaust is missing - as in gone.  I suspect the bike was dropped at speed and slid down the road quite a ways.  All the components on the left side were missing - fortunately the owner mounted engine crash bars - so the engine is fine.  Hopefully the previous owner is as well. ;)

Now for a question.  How would you go about drying out the manual?  It's sat outside for years and is completely soaked.  I'd like to try to salvage it so that I can actually refer back to it.

I'll post some pics if I can.  Don't have a photo server, and I'm not sure if I can just attach shots in the post.  Anyone know if I can?

I would fan out as many pages as possible and try to set it down with the binding perpendicular to a table. Then when it dries out a bit try to carefully split up the rest of the pages.

Now for a question.  How would you go about drying out the manual?  It's sat outside for years and is completely soaked.  I'd like to try to salvage it so that I can actually refer back to it.

I would fan out as many pages as possible and try to set it down with the binding perpendicular to a table. Then when it dries out a bit try to carefully split up the rest of the pages.

I'll try that.
Putting it in the oven seems like it would basically destroy the book.  Something more gentle seems appropriate.  Wasn't sure if I should put something like wax paper between the pages or something to let it dry without the pages all sticking together.  As it stands the pages are practically glued together.

Trust me, if you put the work into this gem it will be well worth it. I'm currently dealing with charging system problems that will hopefully be resolved soon. This is a mean, limited edition, rice burning machine. I, fortunately, have a large portion of the original parts. I've done nothing that can't be reversed. Good luck, get at me with questions, besides how to dry the manual.

Well the horrible advice about broiling it notwithstanding, poking around museum and library sites the most common method of saving water damaged books is to freeze it.  Putting it in the oven was on the list of things to NOT do.

I'm not sure why there's such hostility on display.

I appreciate that.  I have the shop manual, ordered it the day I bought the bike.

If you like I can return the favor.  It's actually quite good, better than the CB550's.
